Arsenal are one of the front runners to sign French midfielder Adrien Rabiot
Arsenal are among the frontrunners to sign French midfielder Adrien Rabiot according to reports in Italy.
It's been a quiet summer for the Gunners so far with Italian midfielder Riccardo Calafiori the only arrival at the club.
Mikel Arteta is looking to strengthen his squad to ensure Arsenal do not miss out on the Premier League title for a third consecutive year.
Arsenal is one of Rabiot's favourites
Rabiot is currently a free agent after the expiry of his contract with Juventus and is reportedly being linked with Manchester United.
However, according to Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport Arsenal are one of three clubs in contention to sign the 29-year-old.
The report adds that Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid are interested in the France international while AC Milan have considered a move before focusing on Monaco's Youssouf Fofana.
The Frenchman is represented by his mother Veronique Rabiot and said the midfielder is attracting interest from more than one club.
“Actually, I'm talking to some teams, but some media say I'm in contact with other teams that I'm not talking to,” he told Gazzetta dello Sport.
So I think other people have spoken for me. But from the beginning of Adrien's career I was the only one talking to the clubs, and if the club is interested they should talk to me directly.”
It is believed that Rabiot wants Champions League football which will give the Gunners a better chance than United playing in the Europa League.
Arsenal are thought to be closing in on a deal for Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino, who won the Euros with Spain this summer.
It is understood the 28-year-old will join in a deal worth more than €30 million and will sign a long-term deal at the Emirates.
