GB&I CURTIS CUP TEAM ANNOUNCED – Golf News
The eight-man squad to represent Great Britain and Ireland in the 43rd Curtis Cup, to be held at Sunningdale Golf Club later this month, has been announced.
The GB&I team that will take on their USA rivals includes Sara Byrne (Ireland); Beth Coulter (Ireland; Hannah Darling (Scotland); Aine Donegan (Ireland); Lorna McClymont (Scotland; Euphemie Rhodes (England); Patience Rhodes (England), and Lottie Woad (England).
The top five players in the World Amateur Golf Ranking and three captains' picks make up the GB&I side. Surrey's Lottie Woad is currently ranked the number one female novice player in the world, while sisters Euphemie and Patience Rhodes from Burham & Berrow in Somerset are the first sisters to compete in the game since Leona and Lisa Maguire in 2010.
Anna Foster (Ireland) and Nellie Ong (England) are non-tourist destinations.
The biennial tournament takes place in the famous Berkshire area from August 30 to September 1, with GB&I looking to win the prestigious trophy for the first time since 2016 when the team secured an 11½-8½ victory in Dún Laoghaire in Ireland.
Catriona Matthew, who led Europe to back-to-back Solheim Cup victories and ushered in a new era for GB&I as captain, said, “I'm looking forward to the match at Sunningdale. We have selected eight players who we believe give us the best chance to win the Curtis Cup again when we play the United States of America at home.
“This role means a lot to me. When I was a beginner golfer, getting into the Curtis Cup side was always a big focus. I was lucky enough to play in it three times. With all my experience as a professional in the Solheim Cup, as a player and as a captain, I enjoyed the opportunity to go back to where it all started. I am delighted to be leading the team at Sunningdale.”
Tickets for the Sunningdale event are available to purchase at www.randa.org. Day tickets for adults cost £22, while a three-day pass costs £44.
