Hayward averaged 15.2 points, 4.4 rebounds and 3.5 assists over 14 seasons, becoming an All-Star in 2017, his final season with the Jazz, the team that drafted him in 2010. After leaving Utah, he played for Boston, Charlotte, and Oklahoma. City before retiring from professional basketball.
Here's how social media reacted to the news:
I will never forget how excited I was when Gordon Hayward joined the Celtics. “It's about to get crazy, G!”, you know. Then something terrible happened in his first Boston game. One of the biggest “what-ifs” in modern Celtics history.
Enjoy your retirement, G.

He thought that Gordon Hayward could have helped the playoff team in their journey this season. He was better than his short time with the Dunder show.
But when it's time, it's time. His time with the Celtics will always be a fun “What if …?”.

In fact, Gordon Hayward may be one of the biggest “What if's?” in Boston sports history. The entire trajectory of the franchise would have changed had he not broken his foot in that first game of the season.

Paul George is officially the only player left in the NBA from the 2010 draft class.
It was him and Gordon Hayward until this morning when Hayward announced his retirement.

Gordon Hayward was cold business until he suffered a serious ankle injury. Godspeed. A great player. Native of Indiana. Those days of Butler set the state on fire. 🫡

What Gordon Hayward did at Butler was crazy…
Disappearance to finish work. So much time.

From an undrafted 3-star prospect to Butler, where he made history leading the Bulldogs to a national championship game, to a top 10 NBA Draft pick, to an All Star in 2017 and a 14-year career in The Association. What an amazing journey Gordon Hayward has been.
