The Rays plan to promote the outfielder Cameron Misner from Triple-A Durham, reports Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. You will join the active program instead of Richie Palacios, who is headed to the 10-day injured list after replacing his knee in yesterday's loss to Miami. Tampa Bay will need to pick up Misner's contract but has three tackles on the 40-man roster after his trade at the trade deadline.
Now 26, Misner was once a highly regarded draft prospect. The Marlins selected him 35th overall in the 2019 draft out of the University of Missouri. He briefly reached Double-A in Miami's system when they sent him to Tampa Bay in an inland trade for a veteran infielder. Joey Wendle.
The book on Misner has been the same since his college days. He has great strength on a 6’4″ frame. He takes a lot of trips and has an amazing amount of runs for a player his size. Scouting reports have been questioning his pure hitting ability, however, with some scouts scoring a 30 (under average on a 20-80 rating scale) on his hitting tool.
Misner spent nearly two full seasons in Durham and continued to live up to expectations. He is a career .236/.360/.453 hitter in nearly 1000 Triple-A plate appearances. Misner has 36 home runs, a whopping 15.7% walk rate, and has stolen 48 bases on 57 attempts in 224 games. The left-hander also struck out more than a third of his trips to the plate, the biggest reason he didn't get a big league call despite big numbers on the bases and power.
The Rays used Misner mostly in center field in the minors. You'll probably get more action from the corners on MLB rosters. That's especially true with the Rays losing Palacios, who has started 40 games in the corner infield this season. Palacios made a career-high 88 total plate appearances, hitting .233/.350/.332 with 301 trips to the plate. He is on his third team in as many seasons after the Rays traded him to the Cardinals for relief Andrew Kittredge in the winter.
Tampa Bay and St. Louis planned another contract release for outfielders this week, as the Rays are shipping Shawn Armstrong to Cards while taking a flier from the would-be top Dylan Carlson. The switch-hitting Carlson could get most left field fans and Misner adds a power belt to Kevin Cash's bench.
