Caleb Plant-Trevor McCumby Will Live In The Canelo Alvarez-Edgar Berlanga PPV Event

Caleb Plant no longer has a job filming the first card of the Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) Prime Video stand-alone.

However, he is armed with a new date for the fight.

The Ring has confirmed that Plant's fight with undefeated contender Trevor McCumby will take place on September 14 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The super middleweight fight will serve as part of the Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez-Edgar Berlanga PBC Prime Pay-Per-View event.

Matthew “Bellini” Brown of Brunch Boxing was the first to report the development.

Plant-McCumby was previously budgeted to take place on Aug. 17 at the Caribe Royale Resort in Orlando, Florida. The night was set aside as the first non-PPV event to be presented under PBC's new deal with Prime Video. However, McCumby's cut during practice not only delayed the fight but killed the entire match.

The four-week delay now puts Plant (22-2, 13 knockouts) ahead of his division rivals.

Plant has not fought since a tough loss to David Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) last March in Las Vegas. Benavidez, ranked No. 1 at 168, remains in the undisputed fight with Alvarez but will campaign at 175.

It could open the way for Plant to re-enter the title picture, a stage he enjoyed from 2019-2021. Plant lost to Alvarez via eleventh-round knockout in their Nov. 2021 to finish his IBF title. Only two fights followed, both under the guidance of boxing mastermind Stephen 'Breadman' Edwards.

Prior to the Benavidez fight, Plant—a Tennessee native now based in Las Vegas—knocked out Anthony Dirrell in the ninth round of their Oct. 2022 in Brooklyn, New York. However, his long absence from the ring since the loss to Benavidez forced him off The Ring's 168-pound roster. He was ranked third before that point.

McCumby (28-0, 21 KOs) has an unblemished record but against limited opposition.

The undefeated 31-year-old from Glendale, Arizona previously recorded a first-round knockout of Donovan George. It was changed to a No-Contest, however, when McCumby tested positive for a banned substance after their Nov. 2016. The matter was on the table, they postponed the decision until the following September.

A nine-month hiatus followed, during which McCumby seriously considered retirement. He has had a change of heart and has won five in a row since returning in 2018. The biggest was in his most recent outing, a ten-round decision over Chris Pearson on the Jan. 31 of ProBox in Plant City, Florida.

Alvarez is trying to defend seven of his RING championships as well as the WBC and WBA 168-pound titles. His WBO belt is also at risk for the sixth time. The IBF belt was stripped from his hand for failing to defend against William Scull (22-0, 9 KOs).

Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs) enters his first title fight.

The 27-year-old Nuyorican has been involved in months of communications with Plant, although few expected a real fight from the situation. Berlanga, ranked No. 9 at 168 by The Ring, has always been a leading candidate for a dream matchup against Alvarez.

A two-city media tour is planned for Monday (New York) and Tuesday (Los Angeles) to officially announce the event.
