These gentlemen discovered that too much alcohol can be detrimental to your enjoyment of golf.

Some players insist that they can take a round when sitting or under the influence.

However, the truth is that this is probably not the case.

Without getting into the pulpit and talking about teetotal golf, this is not a relaxing vacation round.

Who drinks more during the cycle?

Floridians according to a recent study suggest that the state is responsible for the average amount of alcohol consumed during the cycle. They averaged 4.8 drinks per round.

Texas ranks second with 4.6 drinks per round, followed by North Carolina, New Mexico, and Pennsylvania (and Nevada and Missouri, who share 4.2 drinks per 18 holes). Utah, which has a large Mormon population, has the fewest drinks per round (1.1), followed by New England mainstays Massachusetts and Vermont (1.6).

Interestingly, even America's most sober golf states outstrip their UK counterparts by more than half a drink per round. The surveyors also questioned 1,500 UK golfers and found that, despite what the Open and Ryder Cup shows seem to imply, drinking is not part of the golfing culture across the UK and Ireland.

PGA Tour player Joel Dahmen insists that the relationship between alcohol and golf is natural.

“You don't have to be an athlete,” said Dahmen. “You don't travel much and there is a lot of time to rest. This is a good time to drink.”

“Golf gives beginners an opportunity to drink that is not available in other sports,” said Dahmen.

“You can't go to the basketball bench and drink beer,” he said. “That won't make you better. For some people out there, a few drinks make you a better golfer.”
