A possible December Canelo Alvarez fight in Japan
Canelo Alvarez's trainer/manager, Eddy Reynoso, revealed that if they win against Edgar Berlanga on September 14, they plan to fight in December in Japan.
Reynoso did not say who Canelo (61-2-2, 39 KOs) will fight in Japan. There are no Japanese fighters close to Canelo's weight class, but perhaps they have the gift of a crossover fighter willing to move from another sport to face Alvarez.
Japan would not be a good place for Canelo to face Terence Crawford because the match could bring big money if it was played in the States. That is the battle His Excellency Turki Alalshikh is interested in joining. However, ESPN Knockout's Salvador Rodriguez reports that Team Canelo is “not close” to accepting offers from the Turk for the fight. He doesn't say which fight, but it seems like he's talking about the Crawford match.
For such a fight, Canelo would ask for $200 million because Floyd Mayweather Jr. he earned $240M for his fight with Manny Pacquiao in 2015.
Crawford is obviously not in the same league as Pacquiao at that point, but because of the rarity, this fight could still make a lot of money. Crawford will be moving up two divisions after fighting just once at 154 to face Canelo at 168.
Crawford didn't look good last weekend, winning a controversial decision against WBA 154-lb champion Israel Madrimov, but casual fans won't care. They will still be interested in seeing Canelo fight Crawford.
US fans prefer Canelo to stay in the States and fight a live body, like David Benavidez, because he has been recovering inconsistently lately since his loss to Dmitry Bivol in 2022. It looks like Canelo is on his way to retirement, he's facing it. only weak resistance before hanging up his gloves.
We saw Floyd Mayweather Jr. fighting several boxers in Japanese shows. Most recently, Manny Pacquiao fought non-boxer Rukiya Anpo last July in an exhibition match in Japan. Maybe Canelo goes that route and joins the fun that pays well.
“Canelo's team told me that it is not close to the money offered by Turki [Alalshikh] they do, but when they hit [Edgar] Come September, as they hope, Canelo
they fought in Japan in December. The plan is to go beyond the American continent,' said Salvador Rodriguez to X, discussing the possible location of Canelo Alvarez's next fight this year.
