Amir Anderson prepares for debut after being left out of Team USA for Paris 2024
A big week in the life of Amir Anderson.
The 20-year-old American will be making his professional debut on Saturday, but if things had been a little different he would have been preparing to fight for the gold medal at the light heavyweight Olympics in Paris on Wednesday.
“Yeah, it's really disappointing to watch the Olympics and not see myself there,” Anderson told The Ring on Monday. “I have a hard time with it.
“I know that if I was on the USA team, I would have won the gold medal, so it was a big loss for them. But now I'm looking forward to Misfits 16 and preparing for my professional debut.”
Anderson, who won 10 national titles as a freshman and went 88-12, tried to make the Olympics but things didn't work out.
“I fought in the Olympic trials and a situation happened that I was knocked down, [against Obed Bartee-El] they stopped the war,” he explained. “I continued to fight and I won every single minute of the fight after being beaten.
“They have withdrawn the decision that he won the war. After that we entered into a partnership against the Olympic decision and I won the appeal, so they sent it back to me. I finished my Olympic trials. I won against Steven Colome and Nathan Lugo.
“I went to the camp to fight Rahim Gonzales where I realized that I did better than him in the camp and in the competition, I was the winner. I entered the invitational tournament and won against Erik Mendoza and Taylor Bevan and won a walkover over Rahim Gonzales. They pulled me to the other side and told me that they did not select me for the US team after telling me that, If I win the tournament, I will be a representative in the qualifiers. It was really disappointing but there's nothing I can do now.”
The Syracuse, New York native, who trains with Chris Burns, has decided his future lies in the professional ranks and signed with Wasserman/Misfits.
“I've done everything I can do for amateurs outside of the Olympics,” he said. “The way USA boxing handled the situation of the Olympic trials and the qualification process, why do we continue to fight and win this tournament that we have already won for an organization that does not really care about us, that cares about getting a medal instead of caring about themselves. they don't fight.”
He will face Kijonti Davis (1-5, 1 KO) at the James Knight Convention Center in Miami, Florida as part of Misfits 16 on DAZN.
“I'm excited, I've been working on a lot of new techniques and focusing on getting my speed down and feeling sharper like a champion than a novice,” he said. “I am ready to see for myself. I'm doing a 6-rounder, it will be nice to do three more rounds compared to the novices. I will go in there and have fun and fix the things I was fixing in the gym.”
As a professional Anderson will start life as a middleweight. He was an excellent student and intends to make his mark as a professional in the not too distant future.
“My goal is to win the world title, when I was a child, I fought tournament after tournament, without taking breaks, I am trying to win the world title and I have the same mindset of going to better players,” he said. “I have to have that mindset to stay on track and stay motivated and a student to get this world title.
“Consistency for the next three or four years and finally get a world title. Listen, you've followed me through my whole career, little kid from Syracuse, New York. “
Kalle Sauerland of Wasserman Boxing is thrilled to add “Cashman” Anderson to his roster.
“We're very excited about it,” Sauerland said. “He is there [one of] the hottest talent coming out of the US in the next generation and we are very happy to win his signature and all the big influencers come to him. It was a big win for the Misfits.”
