Size Discrepancy
Alvarez hasn't changed his stance on wanting $200M to fight Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs), and the fight doesn't look like it's ever going to happen.
“Obviously he is dangerous. He's a great fighter and on top of that, he brings to the ring on fight night 25 pounds more than me, but I don't care about that. If the money is right, I can beat that guy tomorrow,” Canelo Alvarez wrote to Sway Universe when asked why he wanted $200 million to fight David Benavidez.
Canelo is a super middleweight, and it's not fair for him to fight a guy who's going back to cruiserweight after making weight at 168.
Benavidez Size: A Proven Advantage
Benavidez is big, and we saw that in his last fight when he moved up to light heavyweight in his match against former WBC 175-lb champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk on June 15.
Benavidez proved to be as big as Gvozdyk and fought well, beating him by a 12-round unanimous decision to win the WBC interim light heavyweight title. Canelo's last loss was when he moved up to 175 to challenge Dmitry Bivol for his WBA title in 2022. He doesn't have to fight another light heavyweight unless his $200M asking price is met, which isn't looking like it used to be. the will.
The one who can come up with that kind of dough is His Excellency Turki Alalshikh, but he is not interested in doing that game. He is only interested in Terence Crawford fighting Canelo, and that fight may not happen either.
Canelo wants to be paid well to defend his WBA, WBC, and WBO super middleweight titles against Crawford. While Mexican superstar Canelo (61-2-2, 39 KOs) has yet to reveal his asking price for the Crawford fight, it may be close to what he wants for the Benavidez match. That's understandable because it's a competition that can bring big PPV numbers.
The fans need to stop pushing Canelo to fight Benavidez and let these two fighters compete in their respective weight classes. Benavidez is finally competing in a weight class that suits his large frame, while Canelo is fighting where he belongs at 168.
