NHL Rumors: Mitch Marner Will Get A Promotion But Will It Be In Toronto?
Jamie Hersch: “Today is actually the MLB trade deadline, so we thought we'd talk hockey on that and take a look at some of the guys who have already been traded this offseason. There are big names and big moves on this list, but it also opens up a conversation about who could still be traded this summer. I know that's what we have to do: to wake things up and see if there's something holding us back or if we think it's our job.”
Stu Grimson: “There is a formal discussion with the players that we will discuss, and those discussions are taking place outside of this desk.”
Hersch: “Now there are two days left until August ends. Things will still be fine. We had some notable trades that happened in the middle of the summer, like Matthew Tkachuk happened in the middle of the summer. Last summer, Erik Karlsson happened at this time. So let's put this out there and see what you think about some of the guys that have been talked about in trade rumors, and we have to go north of the border to get this one started because everyone keeps asking about Mitch Marner.
NHL Rumors: What is the future of Mitch Marner in Toronto
He is such a star in various areas of his career in Toronto. He is even named MVP at times. Matthews had nothing to say about that. But we know he's a star. The question is, does Toronto want to keep him? I still don't know much. WHAT ARE YOU THINKING.”
Grimson: “Let's start very slowly. I like where you are going.”
Hersch: “Very easy.”
Grimson: “It's true, but it's also probably one of the most interesting things for me. Consider this: Marner has proven his worth as a Maple Leafs player. He has given this organization a consistent market contribution throughout his time there without question. That said, Marner is also an up-and-coming guy; he will be an unrestricted free agent unless they can work out an extension for Marner.
Here's the thing. Going back two years at a time, if the Leafs have learned anything about it and it's about playing in the postseason, it's all about bringing the Stanley Cup back to Toronto. This team needs more sandpaper, needs more grit when it comes to the top six. You look at that list of candidates and the top six and I go back to the Florida series. The problem the club has with Tkachuk and Bennett are both players you know are part of the top six for the Florida Panthers.
NHL Rumors: Will Mitch Marner Start Season With Toronto Maple Leafs?
I know the Leafs want that kind of gritty presence as part of your top six players who can also produce high offensive numbers so it might please Leaf fans to hear me say Marner is the reason the Leafs failed. for us to win the Stanley Cup again, but he's one piece that could bring more demand as management realizes there's more need to get back into the mix to get over the hump so to speak.”
Hersch: “But if they trade him, they will get hould.” I mean, this guy is a star.”
Grimson: “It will be a struggle. I have to believe that there will be a strong strong player, an NHL player as part of the combination and maybe you know maybe a combination of selected goods and prospects that will match Marner erhaps, but it should not be rich. come back.”
