Anthony Olascuaga, Jonathan 'Bomba' Gonzalez Reach Agreement For WBO Title Fight, Purse Bid Canceled

Anthony Olascuaga and Jonathan 'Bomba' Gonzalez found common ground in time to enjoy the weekend.

The previously planned purse offer was withdrawn as the two sides reached a verbal agreement for their mandatory WBO title fight. The matter was supposed to appear before the WBO on Friday but it is no longer necessary.

“Official: Purse bid for WBO Mandatory Flyweight Division Olascuaga/Gonzalez canceled as teams reach terms,” WBO lead lawyer Gustavo Oliveiri wrote in X. “The date and venue of the game will be announced soon.

Both fights are promoted by Felix 'Tutico' Zabala's All Star Boxing, Inc. Los Angeles' Olascuaga is also promoted by Mr. Teiken Promotions. Honda.

When the agreement was made, no fixed date or time limit existed for the war.

There were suspicions that it will be in conjunction with the WBC flyweight belt fight of Kenshiro Teraji-Cristofer Rosales. However, many sources described in A ring of reports on that war and its ending date as too early.

Teraji also fights under the Teiken banner.

Olascuaga (7-1, 5 knockouts) won the vacant WBO 112-pound title in a stunning fourth-round stoppage over Riku Kano on July 20 in Tokyo. The fight was the third in a row in Tokyo for Olascuaga. His only loss came in the ninth round to Teraji (23-1,1 14KOs), who was the RING/WBC/WBA 108-pound champion at the time. Olascuaga took the April 2023 fight on nine days' notice, replacing Gonzalez (28-3-1, 14 KOs) in what would have been a triple-belt unification fight.

Gonzalez held the WBO junior flyweight title at the time. His 32-month title reign featured only three defenses. Injuries and illness halted his progress until he passed the stage. The 33-year-old southpaw from Caguas, Puerto Rico vacated the title in June.

In exchange, Gonzalez was given the mandatory status at flyweight—a practice often offered by WBO titleholders.

Olascauga is The Ring's No. 8-rated flyweight. Gonzalez is currently No. 1 at 108 by The Ring, but that will change with his next ring appearance.
