Colorado has amazing natural landscapes that lend themselves to the creation of some truly stunning golf courses.
The province is spoiled for choice for good public access courses due to its rich tradition of beginner golf.
Here we look at eight great builds in a scenario that anyone can play.
Grand Elk Ranch and Club
Grand County's only 'Heathland' style golf course at Grand Elk Ranch and Club showcases the rugged natural beauty you'd expect to find in Colorado.
The layout is a great example of the designers creating an exciting Heathland style track that throws more than a few surprises at first time players.
For the 2024 season the club's green fees are in the $129-$149 range.
Wellshire Golf Course
One of eight courses under the Denver Parks and Recreation department, Wellshire is the only public course west of the Mississippi designed by Donald Ross.
The track is known for its challenging greens and fairways and includes spectacular views of the Rocky Mountains.
Green fees for historically rich munis are between $30-$55.
Pole Creek Golf Club
Pole Creek Golf Club boasts the distinction of being one of the few 27-hole public golf courses in Colorado and stands as a treasure of the Rocky Mountain region.
Stretching over 7,107 yards, the Pole Creek Golf Course is a series of stunning fairways, winding through lush fields dotted with wildflowers.
The course is an exciting challenge, featuring elevation shifts that test even seasoned golfers. The wide curved greens, meticulously maintained are a joy of golf, providing a smooth, consistent playing surface that complements the natural beauty of the course.

Rollingstone Ranch Golf Club
Architect Robert Trent Jones II designed the stunning Rollingstone Ranch Golf Club course with spectacular views of the Yampa Valley. Fish Creek runs through seven holes.
Since you're at the Sheraton Steamboat Resort, you can get the best rates for playing the course if you stay at a mountain retreat.
The course is beautiful and it has been noted that players often encounter local wildlife on their travels.
Interlocken Golf Club
Interlocken Golf Club is made up of three nine-hole courses with unique qualities that reflect the magnificent landscape and over 400 meters of elevation changes.
This course also has a training program under Dan Sniffin.
For a resort course green fees are $85-$180 depending on the course you choose. You can also enjoy nine holes for $50 as a guest.
Haymaker Golf Course
Players are rewarded with uninterrupted views of the Yampa Valley and Mount Werner on every hole at the Haymaker Golf Course which is often lauded among the best public access courses in the state.
The course lends itself to golfers of all abilities from beginners to experts and the only distraction is the local wildlife that calls the spectacular scenery home.
Green costs between $92-$154 are justified given the good condition in which the course is kept.
West Woods Golf Club
Each of the three clubs at West Woods Golf Club plays with its own personality and the club is known for putting together a daily combination.
The city of Arvada built the first two nines at West Woods in 1994 with two courses – Sleeping Indian and Cottonwood – designed by one of Colorado's most famous golf architects, Richard M. Phelps.
Phelps' son, Rick, then laid on the third nine-hole course, The King, in 1998 and 1999.
Coal Creek Golf Course
The scenic Coal Creek Golf Course features several water hazards, various elevation changes, beautiful fairways, and skillfully placed bunkers that add challenge to the stunning landscape.
A unique and challenging golf course, Coal Creek plays from 4,825-7,017 yards to a par of 72.
The building was originally designed by Dick Phelps in 1990, however it had to be redesigned by Kevin Norby after Coal Creek was destroyed in the 2013 flood. It reopened in June 2015.
