Sources say that in the days leading up to Russell's decision to opt out of his contract this season, Los Angeles began quietly lobbying the league for deals. When he finally exercised his player option, Pelinka really worked to find him a new home, to no avail. Bottom line: LA needs Russell more than teams around the league. He is their first guardian.
