Promoter Bernard Hopkins says the fight between Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford is “ridiculous.” Hopkins feels Crawford will be disadvantaged by moving up two weight classes to 168 to challenge Canelo (61-2-2-2 39 KOs) for his WBC, WBA, and WBO titles.
Bernard says Crawford, 36, does not need to move up in weight because he still has plenty of “fish” to fight where he fights at 154 and 147.
With a full plate of food at hand, gluttonous Crawford wants more, and can't say 'no' when the chefs tell him that something he wants isn't on the menu.
Crawford showed he still has the skills last Saturday, defeating WBA junior middleweight champion Israel Madrimov by decision. However, he couldn't stop him and was hit with big punches in every round. If Canelo had fired, Crawford would have been sent to him HD1 galaxy 13.5 billion light years away.
Hopkins points out that weight classes exist for a reason, and he feels that Crawford should stay where he is in his own little pond and not go into the deep waters of the ocean to mess with dangerous fish like Canelo Alvarez.
'More Fish to Fry' on 147 and 154
“That's funny. That's why we have weight classes. Size matters a lot of times,” promoter Bernard Hopkins told Fight Hub TV about whether Terence Crawford should fight super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez next.
Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs) won't have the power to stop Canelo from him, and he doesn't have enough speed to block potential shots throughout the rounds.
Even if Crawford survived the 12-round fight, he would lose by a wide decision, which was bad for him and the paying fans.
'Bud' Crawford is not satisfied with the options available at 154 and wants Canelo to fight at super middleweight for financial and legacy reasons. That's a game Crawford won't make it to.
“You find those moments in history where size doesn't mean anything, but that's why it's history. Most of the time, it's the right call. I think of him [Crawford] he has plenty of fish to fry under where he is comfortable. Don't put yourself in a bad situation. Put yourself to the benefit. It's only fair,” Hopkins said of Crawford.
Crawford is still at the wrong age to move up to 168 to face a predator like Canelo Alvarez. That's a fight Crawford will be too young to even consider, and he didn't look any younger Saturday night in his twelve-round decision victory over Madrimov at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles.
