Kris Boyd is urging Leeds to sign Sammie Szmodics after Portsmouth's draw

Kris Boyd believes Leeds should make a move to sign Blackburn Rovers striker Sammie Szmodics after Mateo Joseph failed to impress against Portsmouth.

Having failed to win promotion last season after losing in the play-off final against Southampton, Leeds began the new campaign in dramatic fashion against Pompey.

Daniel Farke's side needed a 95th-minute penalty from Brenden Aaronson to salvage a 3-3 draw at Elland Road.

Boyd urges Leeds to sign Szmodics

It has been a difficult summer for Leeds, who have lost Archie Gray and Crysencio Summerville to Tottenham and West Ham respectively.

This departure has caused the Whites to lose a top quality in their squad, and there is still a chance for many players to leave with Wilfried Gnonto attracting Premier League clubs.

However, Leeds have a huge budget to spend in the reinforcement window and it is important that they use it wisely and bring in the right players.

Szmodics was the top scorer in the Championship last season.

Former Rangers striker Boyd thought Leeds lacked a dangerous goal in midfield and urged them to reinvest some of their money in Szmodics, who was the Championship's top scorer last season with 27 goals.

“He (Summerville) (misses) but what do you look at? Kamara's left, Summerville, Archie Gray's left, you go through the list, they have money there, why not go for a striker?, he told Sky Sports Soccer on Saturday.

“You have someone there, Sammie Smodzics, who scored goals for Blackburn last year, can you go and get him?

“Because they created a lot of chances but they didn't look like scoring goals and it all came from (Willy) Gnonto or Dan James, good work from them. (Jayden) Bogle went forward, Junior Firpo went forward, they put balls in the box but Joseph in the middle huffed and puffed but there was nothing really.”

Szmodics impressed Ipswich at the start of the window and Blackburn will be hoping they can hold on to their star man, who scored in Friday's 4-2 win over Derby.

It's certainly not time to panic after one game but the addition of a proven goalscorer like Szmodics would be a huge plus and could be the difference between automatic promotion or being in the play-offs.
