Player ratings as Cityzens seal Community Shield

Manchester City won the Community Shield title after defeating their rivals Manchester United on penalties.

Late substitute Alejandro Garnacho put the Red Devils ahead in normal time, before Bernardo Silva scored late on to bring the sides level. The game went straight to penalties, where Pep Guardiola's side won.

City will enter the 2024/25 campaign with silverware in their cupboard as they aim to make it five Premier League titles in a row.

How the game happened

United struggled to gain momentum in the opening minutes of the game, choosing to play it safe and play it back to Andre Onana between the sticks rather than go forward. They rarely cross the halfway line to attempt a shot in the City half, allowing Pep Guardiola's side to dominate in attack.

Rico Lewis danced through United's defense with ease, opening up space while creating chances. In 20 minutes he decided to step up his game, shooting the ball towards Onana's goal. Both the goalkeeper and Erling Haaland raced for a touch, before the striker hit the ball into the net.

Haaland's chance was quickly cleared by United's defence, but another came seconds later, this time by Oscar Bobb. He sent his shot flying across the pitch, and United gave themselves a chance to attack.

It was Amad Diallo who first tried to shoot for United – sending a low effort just wide of the net.

Jeremy Doku tried his luck before the break, hoping to emulate his FA Cup final goal. He could not hit the net, the goal was always scoreless as the teams went to the box.

As the game progressed, all eyes on United were nervous. Bruno Fernandes thought he had put his team ahead by curling a fine effort into the back of the net, but quickly realized he had missed the offside flag and the official's quick flag kept the score at 0-0.

Approaching the hour mark, Erik ten Hag pulled out his strategy book and made some changes, opting for a back three.

Marcus Rashford held his head in his hands as he fired a chance against the woodwork, but soon the United fans roared as Alejandro Garnacho put them 1-0 up.

City raced for an equaliser, however, and Silva came off the bench in time to level the teams again. The minutes ticked away and the opposing sides were forced to settle their differences in the penalty shootout, where Jonny Evans' miss allowed Manuel Akanji to win the trophy.

Penalties

GK: Ederson – 6/10 – I didn't have much to do in terms of saving United's attack, but I provided support when needed. At times he struggled to distribute when in possession.

RB: Rico Lewis – 8/10 – One of City's most impressive players on the pitch. The 19-year-old looked like a seasoned figure as he danced in the middle of United's pitch. He created some exciting chances in front of goal as well.

CB: Manuel Akanji – 7/10 – He dropped long passes early but still represented a big danger at the back for City. It usually looks both sharp and alert.

CB: Ruben Dias – 5/10 – Dias often struggled for easy passes, but he blocked Bruno Fernandes' chance in front of goal – whether he meant to or not.

LB: Josko Guardiol – 5/10 – He has fought Amad and usually comes out better when the two face off. He usually seemed slow and maybe rusty.

DM: Mateo Kovacic – 7/10 – He worked to carry the ball well up the pitch and easily silenced United. He tried the odds and once again shut down his opposition – a solid performance.

DM: Nico O'Reilly – 6/10 – Despite his lack of experience, O'Reilly seemed confident about City. The ability to play deep may have worked in the 19-year-old's favor.

RW: Oscar Bobb – 8/10 – It has been shown why he deserves to be called up to the first team. Put on the true blue show and you make a simple task of chasing the wing.

AM: James McAtee – 7/10 – He had an early shot that was unlucky to hit the woodwork, but he made a good move to create chances for his side. A real tech star, home grown.

LW: Jeremy Doku – 6/10 – He did little work in United's defense and drove up and down the pitch with little effort. Couldn't find a goal but tried a good chance before the break.

ST: Erling Haaland – 6/10 – He actually had little impact on most of the game. He found it difficult to choose teammates to help them and had little time in front of goal himself.

Pep Guardiola – 7/10 – He made some smart changes and picked the right players to shoot against. He gave the youth a successful opportunity.

GK: Andre Onana – 6/10 – While United were camped in their own half, Onana did well to keep the ball and distribute it to his team. He said he wants to take a risk this season, so let's see this risk in action.

RB: Diogo Dalot – 5/10 – This was not Dalot's best performance in a United shirt. He didn't fight back against Doku, who caused a lot of problems for the defender.

CB: Harry Maguire – 6/10 – Good defending from Maguire, although the England star usually looks nervous against City's attack. He usually holds on to the ball for a long time without doing anything.

CB: Jonny Evans – 4/10 – The pressure seemed to mount on Evans on defense, and he made mistakes when that pressure mounted. Ten Hag will be hoping all his defenders return from injury quickly. Poor punishment too.

LB: Lisandro Martinez – 6/10 – Courageous performance by Martinez. He stood up while the other members of his group faltered. He made strong tackles and helped keep United on the bounce.

DM: Casemiro – 6/10 – Very strong in defense for United, confident in low duels and tackles. His passing was great and he was unlucky not to see success in front of goal.

DM: Kobbie Mainoo – 6/10 – A joy to watch, offensively and defensively. He returned from international duty with England and went straight to work with United, highlighting the type of player he is.

RW: Amad Diallo – 7/10 – Amad deserves his flowers for playing against City. He was in control on the right wing and provided his teammates with opportunities to create magic. A joy to watch.

AM: Mason Mount – 5/10 – A quiet performance from the Mountain at Wembley, maybe he needs more minutes to prove himself to the team.

LW: Marcus Rashford – 6/10 – Rashford was incredibly unlucky not to get his name on the scoresheet, hitting the woodwork with his chance. He looked frustrated on the field, but he needs to do better if he wants to make a difference this season.

ST: Bruno Fernandes – 7/10 – A great effort from Fernandes is flagged for offside. The captain played a solid game and deserved more shots in front of goal.
