Andrew Moloney is targeting a rematch with Pedro Guevara, which is slated to take place in November
Andrew Moloney has revealed that he is in talks to seek an immediate rematch with Pedro Guevara with a target date of November.
The 33-year-old junior bantamweight contender was on the wrong end of a split decision against Guevara in May when they went to the top of 12 rounds on the undercard of the fight between George Kambosos Jr and Vasiliy Lomachenko in Perth, Western Australia. Judge Samantha Bulner saw Moloney as the winner 116-113, but judges Humberto Olivares and Zanashir Taznaa disagreed, both giving Guevara 115-113 scores.
Moloney was still adamant that he had won the fight and even vowed to leave the game in his interview in the ring after the fight. When the feelings of defeat wore off, Moloney called off his retirement, but remains convinced to this day that he was robbed of victory.
“It was a really disappointing result of the fight,” said Moloney (26-4, 16 KOs) speaking to Beyond The Ropes on 7plus. “I really felt that I won that battle in a satisfactory way. It's hard because I always leave everything in the ring but that night, I honestly felt like I was in complete control of the fight.
“On the night of the fight, I felt like I was winning ten rounds in the second. That's how my corner saw it, too; that's how we all thought it was going. It was like I didn't need to do anything else, I was winning, and not getting a decision at the end of the fight hurt me a lot.”
Moloney entered this fight injured after tearing his biceps 10 days out, which hampered his ability to throw his left hook. He underwent surgery to repair a damaged muscle and says he is on the mend.
While Moloney was recovering, the 35-year-old Guevara (42-4-1, 22 KOs) was plotting to get the ring back in October. Moloney's team urged Guevara to sit out for a month in order to do another double medal.
“I hope we can finish this game,” said Moloney, 33. “We have now started negotiations with his team. I know he is trying to plan another fight in Mexico in October, and we said to him I will be ready in November, just wait, this is going to be a big fight.
“He promised me a rematch, so I'm hoping we can finish it, but it's still too early.”
Moloney added: “I'll fight him anywhere, to be honest. But I think it makes sense to do it in America or here in Australia. There is no big promoter in Mexico and we can pay him here more than he would get there, so it makes sense to do it elsewhere. We will see.”
Guevara and Moloney are separated by only one place in The Ring's 115-pound rankings. The Mexican sits at number six, while the Australian is ranked seventh.
“I really hope that we can do this within a year, get this intersection and I can put it behind,” said Moloney. Besides, he thinks about what could have been forever.
