Brilliant Uihlein records first Asian Tour win at International Series England – Golf News
Peter Uihlein won the International Series England today to register his first win on the Asian Tour, as well as The International Series, after making a stunning comeback on a packed leaderboard.
The American stole the show on Sunday at the Longcross course at Fogwills Club & Resort, firing a blistering bogey-free-under-par 63, for four rounds of 20-under, and a seven-shot victory over England's Andy. Sullivan and Caleb Surratt.
Sullivan shot a 66 while American Surratt shot a 68.
Sampson Zheng (66) from China, Sadom Kaewkanjana (67) from Thailand, and Harold Varner III (70) from the United States are tied for fourth, one stroke back.
EDUCATION RECORD
Uihlein, 34, broke the course record with a 61 to take the lead at the halfway point and started today with a one-point lead over Varner.
Suddenly Uihlein had a one-shot lead over Surratt, playing in the front group.
Uihlein then went on to eagle the par-four 10thth walking three times forward, putting the sunlight between him and the chasing pack.
Birdie on 12th saw him maintain his three-point lead after Surratt bogeyed the same hole.
Uihlein then survived a couple of shaky holes, hitting a crucial par putt from seven feet on the par-four 13th.th. On the next hole, a par-five, he found the trees to the right with his tee shot but played a miraculous recovery shot. His ball took a bad lie, got stuck in the tree branches, but he managed to get back to the fairway and hit his third to 12 feet, just missing the birdie.
In the section on deception section 16thwhen a tight right-pin putt brought the lake to a dangerous green, he holed a 15-footer for birdie to wrap up the title. His face looked relieved as his ball would have gone through the cup if it hadn't fallen.
It meant he had a four shot from Surratt, which became five when Surratt bogeyed the 17th. It was a 6 when Uihlein birdied a 12-footer on 17, and a perfect seven when he drove the par-five 18.th.
RANGEGOATS A DREAM
“It's a bit of a dream,” said Uihlein, who plays for RangeGoats GC at LIV Golf.
“I mean, I was two through eight on the first day. I repeated three times 17, and it was a bit of a grind that day, and the next day I just blinked, and yesterday I kind of survived. And today, obviously, I've had things going my way, no doubt about it. So it was just one of those days when things were going my way, and I took advantage of it. So, I am happy to be here.”
Remarkably, this is Uihlein's fourth win since he began training in 2013. He has won once on the DP World Tour, and twice on the Korn Ferry Tour while in the LIV Golf League and has come close to winning as many times as he has finished second in four. times.
He received a check for US$360,000 and moved into third place in The International Series Rankings, still led by American John Catlin.
The golf course, located in Surrey, has played a major role in his success.
He added: “I loved myself. You were allowed to try different things. You can play it in different ways. Obviously I was very aggressive and tried to drive a lot of greens, and, you know, it paid off. Obviously there are other ways guys can play it, but I liked the strategy we had. I love the game plan we were making, and it was fun to make. So that's part of this, part of the equation.”
REMEMBER MY FRIENDS
Both Sullivan and Surratt, playing together, missed birdie putts at the last to grab second place outright.
Said Sullivan, a four-time winner on the DP World Tour: “I loved it, it was great. I really enjoyed myself, I won't lie. Competitive golf and obviously seeing a lot of guys I haven't seen in a while, obviously, because we're not playing with the Asian Tour anymore, and the LIV guys. So, it's good to see friends that I haven't seen in a long time and catch up, and obviously to play good golf, it's good.”
Surratt was just as happy as he was last week but was disappointed not to get his first win since turning pro in January.
“It's tough because I felt like I was in contention all day, but Peter ran away with it and it's hard to beat,” said the 20-year-old who is also a LIV Golf player.
“This is a good learning experience for me, and I'm looking to improve my game. It's a really good week to build.
“I've been working hard on a lot of things and it's nice that things have turned out well. It's been a year since I've been waiting to succeed. I've had a few phone calls, but I know that week will come eventually.”
WHERE THE FOLLOWING
Earlier in the day Indonesia's Jonathan Wijono led the way with a 64 and ended up finishing ninth, 11 behind the champion.
This week's US$2million tournament is the ninth event of the year on the Asian Tour and the fourth stop on The International Series.
The Asian Tour has a two-week break now before the Mandiri Indonesia Open.
The US$500,000 event will be played at Damai Indah Golf (PIK Course) from August 29 – September 1.St. Thailand's Nitithorn Thippong, who played well this week to finish tied for 13th, is the defending champion.
