Graeme McDowell has been suspended by LIV Golf for violating its anti-doping policy, the 2010 US Open winner and the Saudi Arabian-backed league announced on Sunday in statements.

LIV said the suspension will be for one tournament and will be used at this week's event in West Virginia. Trip said McDowell used “an antiperspirant containing the banned substance, R-methamphetamine (levo-methamphetamine).”

In a statement posted on his X account, McDowell said he used “a common Vicks nasal spray without realizing it might be banned” before the LIV event in Nashville, which took place in late June. He also noted that “unlike other courses, LIV strictly enforces these rules.”

Below is the full statement McDowell sent to X:

“Before LIV Nashville, I was struggling with severe congestion that was preventing me from sleeping. In an attempt to control it, I used a generic Vicks nasal spray without realizing that it might be on the banned list. As a professional golfer, I understand the importance of testing all medications and the option to apply for a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE). Unfortunately, I didn't think to do this because of the situation over the price of this medicine, and I deeply regret the carelessness. I fully accept the sanctions imposed by LIV.

“LIV's Anti-Doping Policy is designed to be clear and transparent. Unlike other tours, LIV strictly enforces these rules, which made this situation more challenging for me. However, I respect the need for these rules and penalties — they are important to maintaining the integrity of the sport.

“I am proud of my 22-year career and the way I have conducted myself throughout these years. Now, I'm focused on moving forward and getting back on the golf course. I look forward to seeing everyone at LIV Chicago!”

In its statement, LIV also said that McDowell will be fined $125,000, and that his and his team's results (he plays with Smash GC on tour) from the Nashville event will be revoked.

Below is the full statement LIV posted on its website:

“LIV Golf has suspended Smash GC's Graeme McDowell for one tournament after finding he violated the league's anti-doping policy during LIV Golf Nashville by using an antiperspirant containing the banned substance, R-methamphetamine (levo-methamphetamine).

“Accordingly, and in accordance with the Policy, the suspension of one tournament will be suspended which will be valid at LIV Golf Greenbrier; a $125,000 fine will be assessed; and individual and team results for LIV Golf Nashville will be released (with prize money and adjusted scores).

“McDowell's slot at Smash GC will be filled by a reserve player to be confirmed at LIV Golf Greenbrier, August 16-18. He will qualify to return to the tournament at LIV Golf Chicago, September 13-15. “

McDowell and his team also posted a slightly different statement on Instagram, which can be read below:

“During LIV Golf Nashville, I was selected for random testing as part of the unit's anti-drug program. I had mistakenly used an over-the-counter decongestant for a congestion that contained a prohibited substance, leading to a positive test. I fully accept and accept the sanctions from LIV Golf, including the suspension from the Greenbrier. This has been a tough read, but I understand the importance of maintaining the integrity of our games. I look forward to getting back on the course with my colleagues at LIV Golf Chicago.”

McDowell has played with LIV since the inaugural league began play in June 2022.
