Berlanga Denies Chasing “That Bag” for Canelo Fight
Edgar Berlanga says he won't just fight superstar Canelo Alvarez on the big pay day+ he'll get for their September 14th main event.
He says that he takes him as his “legacy” because he wants to be in Canelo's place one day as a big star in sports.
Legacy Over Money?
Fans feel that Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs) is only there on payday because if he cared about his legacy, he would have fought better opposition to get to this point.
If the best name on your resume is Jason Quigley, that's a sign that getting “that bag” from Canelo is more important than your legacy. Berlanga would have fought these fighters if he really cared about his legacy:
- David Morrell: Berlanga was Morrell's WBA challenger, and he chose not to fight him
- Caleb Plant: Former IBF super middleweight champion Plant called Berlanga, but he didn't want to. Is it too dangerous?
- David Benavidez: He didn't show interest.
- Jaime Munguia
- Christian Mbili
- Diego Pacheco
“I got Puerto Rico behind me, and I got the hip-hop culture. That's why I say I got the best of both worlds,” said Edgar Berlanga on the Million Dollars Worth of Game YouTube channel about his follow-up to his fight with United super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez on September 14.
Berlanga says he has Puerto Rico behind him, but he's a New Yorker. Therefore, it may be wishful thinking on Berlanga's part to say that he has that country behind him. He is not Miguel Cotto or Felix Trinidad, the Puerto Rican fighters who made a big impact in the sport during Berlanga's 27 years.
“I like to have an island behind me, to have the haters talk, and to have New York behind me. That's what I dreamed of, and I got it. The money is cool, but I'm big on inheritance. My biggest fear is losing,” Berlanga said about him not just coming on September 14 to get his payday. .
If money isn't Berlanga's priority, we'll see what team he faces after his match with Canelo next month. Berlanga should have already fought high-level fights at his age, especially since he says he has been in the sport for 20 years since he was seven years old.
I have a feeling that if Berlanga loses to Canelo, he will again fight the same level of team he has been fighting against and look back on another day to lead him by fighting soft jobs.
“That's why I hate these people who say, 'Payday.' I'm not a crab. I'm not someone who chases money,” said Berlanga who turned down a fight against WBA 'regular' super middleweight champion David Morrell earlier this year to wait for the big payday with Canelo.
People who say Berlanga just cashed out base that idea on his weak resume and the fact that he chose not to fight guys like Plant, Morrell, Benavidez, and Munguia when he could.
“He gave me a chance and I worked hard for this. The fund is there on September 14,” said Berlanga about him who is said to be working hard in the Canelo fight. “That's right [the payday] where already. Now, it's about stamping my name on boxing. I try to get to where he is. It is not a body in this fight. It's psychological. Intelligence, and that is what will make the difference.”
Berlang's best counters are these fighters:
– Jason Quigley
– Steve Rolls: 40
– Traveler Alexis Angulo: 40
– The concern of Marcelo Esteban
– Padraig McCrory
– Demond Nicholson
“Everyone keeps talking about power. 'Grandfather.' That's right. He's strong, too. He can also hit, but it's about attitude, IQ. That's what happened on September 14,” said Berlanga
Edgar is not known for being smart, and it sounds unrealistic when he sees himself matching up with Canelo on the mental side of the game.
