Starters: Paxton, Musgrove, Betts

Here are three things we'll look at in Major League Baseball today:

1. James Paxton go to MRI, the Red Sox system submits the following:

Red Sox starter James Paxton He left his start yesterday in the first inning with a right calf strain. The lefty will undergo an MRI today, after which the team will have a better understanding of his injury. However, it seems certain that the veteran will be placed on the 15-day IL before tonight's game against the Rangers. He left the field in great pain on Sunday and used crutches to walk around the cave after the competition.

According to manager Alex Cora (as reported by MassLive's Chris Cotillo), Boston plans to make some additional plans today. In one, the right hand Brian Bello will return to the father list starting this evening. Moreover, on the left Brennan Bernardino has already been optioned to Triple-A (per Cotillo), though the team has yet to officially announce the deal. Bernardino gave up four earned runs in 1 1/3 innings of work yesterday.

2. Joe Musgrove The answer comes from the Padres:

Right-handed All-Star Joe Musgrove will be recalled from the 60-day IL that begins tonight for the Pirates. Before he can be activated, the Padres will need to make room for him on the 40-man roster. They could do that by transfer Fernando Tatis Jr. from the 10-day IL to the 60-day IL, considering that the star is unlikely to return until September.

Musgrove hasn't played for San Diego since the end of May, developing inflammation in his pitching elbow. He got off to a rough start this year, pitching to an uncharacteristic 5.66 ERA over his first 10 starts. However, his 4.23 SIERA is a little promising, and his record is the best for a starting pitcher. In his first three seasons with San Diego from 2021-23, Musgrove posted a 3.05 ERA and 3.61 SIERA in 78 starts. The Padres will hope that version of Musgrove returns to their rotation. Although they've played very well of late (8-2 in their last 10 games, 20-10 in their last 30), they've relied on Randy Vásquez (4.63 ERA, 4.88 SIERA) as the fifth starter. Musgrove could provide a big boost as the Padres' battle for the NL West continues.

3. Mookie Betts back in the Dodgers' right field:

Mookie Betts will return to the Dodgers lineup today, batting second and playing right field – not leading off or playing shortstop. Manager Dave Roberts broke the news to reporters (including Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic) last week. The group will stick Shohei Ohtani in the leadoff position, and the second baseman Gavin Lux and shortstop Miguel Rojas will play in the middle. Bettors will split Ohtani again Freddie Freeman at the top of the list and returns to the position where he has won six Gloves.

The eight-time All-Star has been out since mid-June with a broken hand. Although his extended absence cost him the chance to win the NL MVP, Betts will be back in plenty of time to help as the Dodgers try to secure what would be their 11th NL West title in the last 12 years. LA currently holds a 3.5 game lead over Arizona and San Diego.
