Virgil van Dijk wants a new Liverpool contract signing
Virgil van Dijk has revealed that he has not yet been offered a new contract with Liverpool even though he is 12 months into his current contract, and is determined that the club will sign new players.
The Netherlands international, who signed for the Merseyside club in 2018, has been integral to the club's success over the years. He made 48 appearances in the 2023/24 campaign and scored the winner against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final – Jurgen Klopp's last trophy with Liverpool.
Van Dijk is expected to start the upcoming campaign under new coach Arne Slot. Speaking after pre-season friendlies against Sevilla and Las Palmas, he said no progress had been made on a new contract and called on the club to be active in the transfer market.
“There are no changes yet,” he said when asked if a new contract was in place. “Obviously I think we have to sign others depending on how long the season goes, but I think they're working behind the scenes and I'm absolutely sure and I trust the club to do the right thing for us and get the best for us to compete in all the competitions we're in.
“That's the main focus for me, to have confidence and we'll see what happens. I think they're working hard at the back, we'll see how that goes.
“We're going as far as we can and that's the aim. I have ambitions, we all have ambitions. We all want to achieve the best we can. We take part in each competition to try to win it. It's almost impossible to win it. We've done that but we're ready for the start of the Premier League and we hope to grow into a season and do very well.”
Van Dijk featured in Liverpool's 4-1 win over Sevilla before they were held to a 0-0 draw by Las Palmas in Sunday's double-header at Anfield.
The Reds kick off their 2024/25 Premier League campaign on Saturday when they travel to newly promoted Ipswich Town.
