What you need to know (and 6 players to watch)

The beauty of the men's golf season continues, as players teed off at 7 a.m. on two separate courses in the Twin Cities area on Monday for the start of the 124th US Amateur.

The field has 312 players, with the youngest at 14 (Jaden Soong) and the oldest at 61 (Rusty Strawn). Here's everything you need to know, including how to watch the action, notable players and more.

2024 US Amateur golf courses

Hazeltine National Golf Club, Chaska, Minn. – Hazeltine is hosting the US Amateur for the second time in its history, and the club's first marquee event as it was the home venue for the 2019 KPMG Women's PGA Championship and the 2016 Ryder Cup. Hazeltine will play 7,552 yards with a par of 72. The frenzy is always high here and it's only going to get worse this week.

Chaska Town Course, Chaska, Minn. – Chaska Town Course, muni miles from Hazeltine, will serve as stroke-play manager Monday and Tuesday. At 6,804 yards, it is significantly shorter than Hazeltine and will play as a par 70 (with two par-5s converted to par-4s). Players will drop here more than Hazeltine will allow, and Billy Horschel still holds the course record (60) dating back to the 2006 US Amateur. The Arthur Hills course is an $82 weekend getaway and one of the top public courses in the Twin Cities.

6 words to know about the 2024 US Amateur

Nineteen of the top 20 players in the World Amateur Golf Rankings are in the field, a list that includes the No. 1 Gordon SargentNo. 2 Jackson Koivun and 3 Luke Clanton. Sargent, a 21-year-old rising senior at Vanderbilt, won the 2022 NCAA Division I Championship. Koivun, a 19-year-old rising sophomore at Auburn, helped the Tigers win the 2024 NCAA Division I title last season and is the first player in combined history to win all four major awards in the past season: Mickelson (player's ) and Haskins, Jack Nicklaus and Ben Hogan (national player of the year). Clanton, 20, recently made headlines when the Florida State junior recorded consecutive top 10 finishes on the PGA Tour, the first rookie to do so since 1958. He was at it again this past weekend, when he took part in the Wyndham Championship for the fifth time on Sunday night before hopping on the US Am plane and tee time on Monday afternoon.

The most well-known name in the field may be John Daly IIthe 21-year-old son of the great champion John Daly. The younger Daly went 5-for-4 in a playoff at Brook Hollow Golf Club in Dallas to earn his first US Am bid.

Another player who is already making a splash this year Miles Russell15, who became the youngest golfer ever to win on the Korn Ferry Tour when he participated for the 20th time in the LECOM Suncoast Classic. Last year, Russell became the youngest person to win the AJGA Rolex Boys Player of the Year, an honor previously held by Tiger Woods.

But no player may have more experience in these two disciplines than you Gunnar Broina 22-year-old Minnesotan who plays on the Kansas men's golf team. Broin grew up in Shorewood, Minn., nine miles from Chaska, and has logged many rounds at the Chaska Town Course. He also spent the last few summers caddying at Hazeltine. He is one of 13 players in the field to qualify for the 2024 US Open at Pinehurst No. 2; made the cut and tied for 70th. (Broin is also one of five Minnesotans in the field.)

Found by the US Amateur winner

In addition to the gold medal and the Havemeyer Trophy, the winner of the 2024 US Amateur receives an exemption to the 2025 US Open at Oakmont and the 2025 Open Championship at Royal Portrush. The winner and runner-up may also receive invitations to the 2025 Masters.
