De La Hoya Defends Vergil Ortiz Jr.'s Controversial Win, Angrily Attacks CompuBox
Promoter Oscar De La Hoya took to social media to fiercely defend his boxer, Vergil Ortiz Jr., after winning his fight against WBC Junior middleweight champion Serhii Bohachuk last Saturday night. De La Hoya tagged Vergil Jr. in his poisonous post.
He is still frustrated because of the disagreement with his boxer Vergil Jr. (22-0, 21 KOs) is getting in the boxing world for his feud, De La Hoya posted a photo of CompuBox Stats, which did not paint a flattering view of Ortiz Jr's. to fight.
Statistics Don't Lie
The stats confirm what fans saw in the fight: Bohachuk (24-2, 23 KOs) got the best of Vergil Jr. but he was tortured by Nevada judges.
“You don't know [blank] about boxing!! And new!!!!!
@VergilOrtiz,” De La Hoya told X, responding to CompuBox's calculations.
De La Hoya's strike on CompuBox doesn't make much sense because it's math, and it's not their fault that they didn't tap Vergil to make it look like he won the fight. Even if they did, the fans saw what happened that night and largely viewed Bohachuk as the real winner.
After the fight, De La Hoya and Vergil's trainer, Robert Garcia, said they wanted the next Terence Crawford in Ortiz Jr. it won't be good.
Bringing back Vergil Jr. in a fight against Crawford after a controversial decision will hurt the sales of the event because the fans will see it as a dirty fight. This is not only because of Vergil's controversial victory but also because of Crawford, who is coming off a controversial 12-round decision against WBA Junior middleweight champion Israel Madrimov on August 3 in Los Angeles.
Madrimov landed hard, clean shots in every round of the fight and made Crawford look old. All Crawford could do was throw jabs, and it wasn't enough to get past the right hands Madrimov was getting hit with. Those shots were cutting Crawford's head sideways.
Reciprocity Request
Instead of De La Hoya getting angry at CompuBox, he should do the right thing by having Vergil give Bohachuk a replay to end the feud. If De La Hoya believes that Vergil has won and is the next star, he should do a rematch. If Vergil can't beat Bohachuk without the judges' help, he won't go far in this match.
He can't win controversial decisions all the time, and he'll have a lot of trouble against the other top players at 154 simply because he's a guy who's always on the run every day.
As one of our writers said, Vergil Ortiz Jr Alfredo Angulo of todayand that is true. He is a weaker version of younger Angulo because that guy could punch when he was younger.
