Welcome to Shaving Strokes, the GOLF.com series where we share the progress, lessons learned and takeaways from novice golfers like you — including the speed bumps and challenges they've faced along the way.

Maybe it's just a mid-hand-handcapper for me, but I can't tell you how many times actually pure shot, stare down, and see the ball go indeed where I was aiming – which wasn't even the right place to start!

Like many novice golfers, understanding how to swing the golf ball can be more difficult than it needs to be. That's because many of us just try to go up to the flag that's hundreds of yards away, rather than making things easier by choosing an intermediate target instead.

What does that mean? According to GOLF Top 100 instructor Jim Murphy, your average target should be no more than a few inches in front of your ball, which will make it easier for you to ensure you're aiming well.

So instead of aiming your shots straight – only to go yards away from the flagstick or green – try Murphy's simple aim hack to give yourself a better chance of sticking it close.

Here's how to aim for golf, according to a top instructor

“When you're hitting the golf ball, you always want to look behind it and you like to visualize the ball going toward the target,” Murphy tells me. “Then you want to choose a medium target.”

But instead of choosing the farthest thing in front of you, Murphy says focus on the target that's almost directly below your nose.

“People have heard that for a long time, but, usually, their average target is 10-15 yards up there. [and in front of them]. If it is that far there, it might be a vice,” he said. “I like something 6-8 inches in front of the ball – the closer the goal, the easier it is to aim.”

During our lesson together, I identified a simple divot that was about half a foot in front of my ball. Murphy then explained his recommended procedure as I plan on the ball.

“The first thing you want to do is point the golf club,” he tells me. “So aim the club where your face is square and your target centered, and position your body accordingly.”

After taking his advice, I not only refined my shot, but myself actually watch the ball hit my intended target – rather than mis-aiming hundreds of yards away.

So just find an average target a few inches in front of your ball, grind the club to square it, and you'll make sure your aim and alignment are perfect before hitting each shot.
