Yankees Plan To Place Jazz Chisholm On IL With UCL Injury
The Yankees will probably put Jazz Chisholm Jr. on the 10-day injured list due to a UCL injury in his left elbow, manager Aaron Boone told the New York Rhythm (reported to X by Chris Kirschner of The Athletic). The organization is not sure if Chisholm will need surgery.
If there is a silver lining, it's that the injury is to Chisholm's non-throwing arm. Still, it's a tough blow to knock the Yankees' deadline acquisition off the roster. Chisholm is off to a great start in his time in the Bronx. He has seven homers in 14 games. He is hitting .316/.361/.702 in 61 trips to the plate since the trade.
Chisholm had connected on 13 long balls against Miami. This is his first major league campaign to reach 20 homers. He also swiped 27 bases (including a perfect 5-5 showing with the Yankees) and now owns an above-average slash line of .257/.328/.445 on the year. The Yankees have won nine of 14 games since Chisholm joined the team. They enter tonight's game a half game behind the Orioles for the top spot in the AL East. Baltimore is tied with the #1 seed in the American League, so that's in play for New York as well.
While Chisholm has spent his entire Marlins career in the middle of the diamond (mostly second base or center field), he has moved to the hot corner in the Bronx. Chisholm has been in the starting lineup for all 14 games since the Yankees acquired him. 13 of those went to third base, and he started in one spot. The hot corner has been a problem for New York all season. Yankee third basemen other than Chisholm hit .231/.292/.320 with 419 trips to the plate.
Oswaldo Cabrera again DJ LeMahieu I got the bulk of that work and no one has ever reached the league average. The Yankees deployed LeMahieu as the right-handed side of the team's first-team lefty. Ben Rice recently. That would point to Cabrera, who gets the nod tonight against the White Sox righty Jonathan Cannonas the primary option if Chisholm goes on the shelf. Oswald Perazawho is hitting .244/.352/.384 in a pedestrian Triple-A campaign, is on the 40-man roster. That's right Jorbit Vivasthe Yankees acquired him in an off-season trade with the Dodgers. The Yankees called Vivas up briefly for the All-Star Break but did not put him in the game. He is hitting .242/.379/.374 over 58 Triple-A contests.
The Yankees will no longer be able to turn to the trade market for anything more than minor league depth. Amed Rosario headed for waiver wire after being designated for assignment by the Dodgers last night. If Chisholm wants a long-term extension, the Yankees could look to bid for a righty hitter. New York is behind everyone but the Phillies, Guardians and Orioles in waiver priority, however. There's a good chance another team will claim Rosario before the Yankees get the chance.
