Ange Postecoglou sets Tottenham's trophy target for the second season

Ange Postecoglou says Tottenham Hotspur are in a better position to challenge for silverware in his second season in charge ahead of their Premier League opener against Leicester City on Monday night.

Spurs made an impressive start to their first campaign in Australia before mixed results saw the north London side drop to fifth place, missing out on the Champions League without a run in the FA Cup or Carabao Cup. There was also no European football on offer at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, although 2024/25 will see the club compete in the Europa League.

The Lilywhites have not won a trophy since 2008 and Postecoglou says his team must be able to do better boxing in the various competitions they participate in this year.

He told Sky Sports: “I guess I'm not the new shiny thing anymore, so there are other new managers. People can go find them and their friendships and not have to talk about mine.

“Usually in my second season I win things. That's the whole idea. The first year is about establishing principles and creating a foundation. I hope the second year will win things. Of course, it's easier said than done, especially in the Premier League and the competition we're in. The way I always look at it, is that the second year has to be we are in a position where you can push, depending on how the first year went.

“Last year we had some great times, obviously we had some hard times. I think we learned as much from the hard times as we did from the good things and hopefully that means we're in a good place. We're definitely in a good place. A better prepared team than last year.”

Spurs have brought in Dominic Solanke, Archie Gray, Wilson Odobert and Lucas Bergvall on a permanent basis this summer, while Timo Werner has also re-signed on a season-long loan.
