Laura Diakun: “I know you had a successful season. You know, most of it, inside right? The contract extensions you mentioned. It is still under construction. Not really looking at free agency. Not really trading.
It's been hard to stay that way when you don't want to sell the farm in the future, you want to have that kind of confidence in the guys you already have in the system?
Who Will Win The Central Division Next Season?
Hughes: “Yes. I mean that's the challenge we're going to face as we move into this next phase of what we're trying to build in Montreal. That we can make moves that can make us a better team tomorrow, but we need to worry about the day after and the day after that. And how do we continue to move the ship forward without hindering these young players that we are building and hopefully will be a big part of who we are when we are ready to compete for Stanley Cups.”
Uncertainty remains for the Toronto Maple Leafs and Jani Hakanpaa

Mark Masters: “So the top four players are still in Toronto this coming season, but there has been a personnel shake-up on the Leafs' blue line.
Chris Tanev comes in, Oliver Ekman-Larsson comes in, and we thought Jani Hakanpaa was coming in. In fact, Treliving mentioned him by name on July 1st, but we haven't seen a signed contract yet. What's going on?”
Johnston: “Well, they're still working on his health. Jani Hakanpaa ended last season with a serious knee injury. Obviously, at this point since, you know, he and the Leafs are engaged in contract negotiations.
There was an opportunity to look up some medical information. He feels like he can play. And I think the Leafs and their doctors, perhaps more importantly than the front office, should be relieved that this is indeed the case. That's health wise, it makes sense to do this.
So Brad Treliving was asked about it directly after the ceremony, and he said, 'Look, this is not the day to talk about it, but you hope there will be some clarity soon.'
- Terry Koshan: Treliving on Hakanpaa: “Working on that. Today we are dealing with this, but hopefully we will get there soon.”
NHL rumors: Jeremy Swayman, and Tyson Barrie
And so, I really think, that's where it stands is that both sides are trying to get comfortable with the health situation. Can the Leafs go ahead, and sign that contract? And we have to see where that ends.”
