Columbus Blue Jackets Trade Patrik Laine to Montreal Canadiens
The Columbus Blue Jackets traded forward Patrik Laine and a 2026 second-round pick to the Montreal Canadiens for defenseman Jordan Harris.
Laine has two years left at $8.7 million, Harris made $1.4 million and an RFA after the season.
Puck Pedia: The Canadiens added a net cap hit, and are now expected to be $1.1 million over the cap with a 22-man roster – 14 forwards, six defensemen, two goaltenders and the injured Carey Price .
They will send players to the minors and put Carey Price and his $10.5 million on LTIR.
Aaron Portzline: Blue Jackets General Manager Don Waddell: “We're looking for players who want to be a Blue Jackets and Patrik has made it clear that he thinks the change is good for him. We were able to get a great young player in Jordan Harris while maintaining financial flexibility, which was very important to us. “
Thoughts from the media
Renaud Lavoie: “The fact that Jordan Harris is part of that trade is not a surprise. He's been on the block for a while now every left D with the Habs. “
Eric Macramalla: “Love the Canadiens get Patrick Laine. They are getting the points they need so much and Laine is sitting in a good position where he will be supported. Win win.”
Arpon Basu: “Suzuki, Caufield, Dach, Laine, Anderson, Gallagher, Armia, Evans: all right shots.”
Charlie O'Connor: “I like to go to Montreal, and if Laine doesn't work out, they also have a second-round pick, which lowers the possibility. That said, I think Laine in that lead shot comes with real danger, and Harris is a decent enough defender. “
Anthony DiMarco: “Talking to some managers, the main take away from MTL/CBJ deal is risk on Laine at full AAV is risky but Habs is in a financial position that gives them the freedom to do so. If you are CBJ, you had no choice but to leave Laine; To send him at full price is a win.”
Eric Engels: “Talks with Laine and his agent obviously reassured the Canadians. They were one of the only teams that could take a cap hit, and doing so cost Columbus (2nd round pick). Yes, Jordan Harris is going the other way, but he's moving from a forward position.”
Arpon Basu: “If the Canadiens are going to add offensive firemen this summer, you couldn't find a better time for that contract than two years. There is a risk of getting Patrik Laine, but this name is good for Montreal.”

Patrik Laine projects to be a borderline scorer in a big role. But coming in $2M short of his cap hit over the next two seasons helps explain why Columbus needs to attach a second-round pick to land him. pic.twitter.com/bKImLO5x6B
