NHL Trade: Edmonton Oilers Make Trade To Deal Off Offer Sheets

The Edmonton Oilers acquired Vasily Podkolzin

Edmonton Oilers: The Oilers traded a 2025 fourth-round pick to the Vancouver Canucks for forward Vasily Podkolzin. The first choice was Ottawa.

Puck Pedia: The 23-year-old Podkolzin is in the first year of a two-year contract with a $1 million salary hit.

Iain MacIntyre: “After signing 4 players in free agency, it's no surprise that the Canucks are taking EDM 4th-rounder Vasily Podkolzin now rather than waiting until he fails to make the team in the fall. Anyway, I'm sorry to see Vasily go. Good kid, Honest, talented. Needs to rebuild confidence and get a chance.”

Puck Pedia: The Canucks now have $190,833 in projected salary cap space with a 23-man roster – 14 forwards, seven defensemen, two goaltenders, and Tucker Poolman on IR.

If Poolman continues the LTIR, it will be for $2.5 million.

Is it surprising that the Sidney Crosby Extension hasn't been signed yet?

The Edmonton Oilers trade Cody Ceci to the San Jose Sharks

San Jose Sharks: The Edmonton Oilers traded defenseman Cody Ceci and a 2025 third-round pick to the Sharks for defenseman Ty Emberson.

Puck Pedia: Ceci is in the final year of her contract and has a $3.25 million cap hit.

Emberson signed a one-year deal worth $950,000. He will be an RFA after the season if he plays 50 games, if he plays less than 50 games he will be a Group 6 UFA.

The Oilers saved $2.3 million in the trade.

Mark Spector: The Oilers now have room to match both offers (Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway) by sending one player with a cap hit of $850,000 or more to the AHL. Options could be Derek Ryan, Ty Emberson, Vasily Podkolzin or someone else.

Jim Matheson: “Okay, now the Oilers trade Ceci and his record $3.5 million to San Jose for right tackle Ty Emberson, who played for Knoblauch on the Rangers' farm team in Hartford. It looks like they're going to match Broberg now and let Holloway go with Podkolzin here in the previous trade. “

Puck Pedia: So now…

  • EDM can match both offer sheets
  • If they are the same and Kane returns with everyone healthy, he can only agree to another trade
  • If it fits Broberg but not Holloway, it could fit the cap when Kane returns without needing another trade

Ryan Rishaug: “For now, they will be the same for Broberg. Holloway's mood is up in the air. We'll see.”

  • Puck Pedia: “If during the season Kane is healthy and open to LTIR, #LetsGoOjler could not comply with the cap by sending players down. I would have to make a trade or have other players on LTIR. “
  • Puck Pedia: “If #LetsGoOilers similar to Broberg but not like Holloway, if Kane is activated from LTIR in the middle of the season they may be compatible with the cap by simply dropping players”
