Postecoglou keen to hire good 'people' rather than 'players'

Ange Postecoglou admits that he doesn't only look at a player's football ability when signing up for his club.

Tottenham have brought in a host of new faces this summer, including 18-year-olds Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall, as well as Dominic Solanke, Wilson Odobert and Min-hyuk Yang.

And others could be in line to make their competitive debuts when Spurs travel to Leicester on Monday Night Football.

But the Australian boss says he looks for more than just the skills of the people he tries to sign.

Speaking ahead of the Foxes game, he said: “It's an important part of the process and I think it goes back to what I've been saying a lot – part of recruiting is understanding that you're not looking at footballers, you're recruiting people.

“What kind of person are they? Why do they want to come to Tottenham? Are they ambitious? Are they open-minded? Are they ready to take on the big challenge of creating something special at a club with such success?

“All these kinds of things, and hopefully things that they've identified so that when they come here they feel like it's the right place for them.

“I hope they go into the dressing room with like-minded people who all have that kind of mentality. That helps them visualize what we are trying to build.

“It's probably an easier program for the boys, the new players coming in this year because they go into the dressing room and the boys will explain to them and make it clear to them what they're trying to do.

“Even though last year it was about me trying to build that place, I'm trying to paint those pictures for everyone, not just the players and staff, but everyone on the football team. Hopefully this year, for the guys we've brought in so far, they come into the locker room and feel good about what we're trying to do.”

Postecoglou recently suspended Yves Bissouma after the midfielder was caught sniffing an illegal cigarette on social media.

The coach said he could return to the squad but insisted that he is looking for people with a good attitude and mentality to play for him.

Bissouma's misdemeanor is a good example of why Postecoglou likes to assess each new player as an individual before bringing him in.
