If there are no other distractions, the highly publicized fight between former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson and social media star turned professional boxer Jake Paul will go down on November 15 at AT&T Stadium in Texas. The bout could draw a crowd of nearly 100,000 people and will benefit greatly from pay-per-views, where the desire for new fights like this one can reap huge benefits. Tyson-Paul will take place nearly 38 years after Tyson won his first heavyweight title in a two-way contest over Trevor Berbick back in 1986. Shocking stuff, to be sure.
The truth is that Tyson-Paul was supposed to appear this summer, but the swollen wound forced Tyson's team to delay it. Indeed, there was reason to believe that war might not happen. Now, however, it seems it's all systems go – at least for now. “I faced a little difficulty. I was sick, but I feel good,” said Tyson at the weekend press conference officially announcing the match with Paul. “If I catch this boy, it will be over, he will run.” He will run like a thief.”
Tyson may be right, but those old legs of his are going to grow fast if he doesn't catch his man in the first few rounds. Not that the fighter once known as “Iron Mike” doesn't have a chance to catch young Paul early. And if he does, Paul will find himself in grave danger. The last thing they say going into a fight is strength – and Tyson's strength is legendary. Another thing to remember is that – although he takes boxing seriously – Paul does not have a great talent.
The truth of the matter is that there is good reason to dislike this war. Tyson is now closer to sixty than fifty. That, quite simply, means that the guy is too old to step into a boxing ring, even in a two-minute round match like the one with Paul. This fight has already been postponed once due to health issues. There are warning signs. It's going to take a lot more than warning signs to stop this gravy train from reaching the station. Too much money is at stake. There's more than a little hubris involved, too. Of course, the boxing icon of yesteryear can be sure to win in November. “Who else can do it but me?” Tyson asked at the weekend press conference.
