Aston Villa's move for Liverpool star Joe Gomez depends on Diego Carlos
Unai Emery is keen to bring in a new central midfielder to Aston Villa before the transfer window closes and the Spanish coach has his eye on Liverpool's Joe Gomez.
The England international has been linked with a move away from Anfield throughout the summer and according to talkSPORT, the defender was set to complete a £45m move to Newcastle at the start of the window.
With the Magpies pursuing Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi, a move for Gomez is now unlikely, but the report claims Aston Villa remain interested in the Liverpool star.
Birmingham are monitoring the Englishman's condition at the Merseyside club after the 27-year-old was left out of Arne Slot's squad for the Reds' Premier League opener of the season against Ipswich Town on Saturday.
This suggests that Gomez is likely to move on before the transfer window closes but a move to Aston Villa is dependent on Diego Carlos leaving, as the 31-year-old is wanted by Fulham.
Joe Gomez will be a great signing for Aston Villa and Unai Emery
Liverpool's willingness to sell Gomez is surprising given the defender's importance to Jurgen Klopp last season. The 27-year-old made 51 appearances for the Merseyside club and played in a number of different roles as he helped his German boss deal with a string of back injuries.
Gomez is out of contract at Anfield in 2027, therefore, Liverpool are under no pressure to sell the defender which makes their decision to part with the player difficult to understand.
Sepp van den Berg's future is also up in the air and if the Reds sell both, that leaves Slott with just three defenders to choose from, with no sign of another arriving at Anfield anytime soon.
