Dodgers Designate Nick Ahmed for Assignment

The Dodgers selected a shortstop Nick Ahmed by assignment and the designated rookie quarterback Andy Pages to Triple-A Oklahoma City tonight. The move opened up some spots on the big league roster Max Muncy again Tommy Edmanboth are back on the 60-day disabled list. Ahmed's DFA opened up one spot on the 40-man roster, and the Dodgers passed on Ryan River in IL for 60 days to create more space. Ryan had Tommy John surgery and is out for the season. Los Angeles also missed a catcher Hunter Feduccia and put in a veteran backup Austin Barnes on the 10-day injured list with a broken toe.

Ahmed signed with the Dodgers last month. With Mookie Betts again Miguel Rojas at that time, Los Angeles added Ahmed directly to the major league roster. The defensive player started 14 games at shortstop. He continued to provide value defensively but was less productive offensively. While Ahmed hit a home run to help beat the Giants (his former team) early in his Dodger tenure, he ended up hitting .229/.245/.292 in 49 trips to the plate.

Between San Francisco and LA, Ahmed owns a .232/.271/.300 batting line in 221 plate appearances. Although he has never been a major threat, Ahmed has struggled to play the past two seasons. The two-time Gold Glove winner is still a solid defender, but a lack of fire at the plate has kept him out of the top three the past two seasons. The Dodgers welcomed Betts and Rojas in recent weeks. Even with Betts returning to the outfield, they were comfortable enough with their outfield depth to hold off on the deadline. Amed Rosario after five games.

Los Angeles now adds two more playmakers to Muncy and Edman. The former should return to his day job at third base, walking Enrique Hernández I'm back in the role of help. Muncy has been sidelined for three months after dealing with a problem that turned out to be more important than the team initially expected. The power hitter hit .223/.323/.475 for the season.

Edman is a versatile defenseman who can play anywhere except as a forward. He spent the entire 2024 campaign on the injured list. Edman had postseason wrist surgery while a member of the Cardinals. St. Louis hoped to be ready in time for Opening Day, however a slow recovery process kept him from rehabbing until mid-July. The Dodgers, however, found Edman on the sidelines Michael Kopech in a three-way trade that was one of the biggest moves of the offseason. Louis stayed Erick Fedde again Tommy Pham from Chicago, who were focused on their return all around Miguel Vargas from Los Angeles.

The Stanford product is now set for his Dodger debut. Manager Dave Roberts told reporters last week that Edman will get most of his work in midfield (X link via Fabian Ardaya of Athletic). A middle infielder by trade, Edman had never started a major league game in center until last season. The Cards gave him 310 2/3 innings there and were rewarded with strong defensive grades — which have been a theme for Edman no matter where he's played — in that limited sample.

Plugging Edman into the outfield pushes the Pages on the MLB roster right now. The 23-year-old had a great rookie season, hitting .246/.305/.388 in 394 trips to the plate. Kevin Kiermaier should move to fourth place while Page gets playing time every day for a few weeks in OKC. Journalist Francis Romero wrote on Twitter that the Dodgers may recall the Cuban-born player if the active roster expands to 28 players on September 1.

Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times first noticed that pages and Ahmed were being sent.
