Former NFL star and Hall of Famer Peyton Manning is a sports legend. Full stop. He earned his elite-quarterback status on the gridiron, but the two-time Super Bowl champion is a hell of a golfer, too.
You wouldn't know one of his hottest performances this week was the BMW Championship Pro-Am, where Manning opened the event in dangerous, if not hilarious, fashion.
Even before he retired with a Super Bowl trophy in his hands, Manning was a regular PGA Tour pro-am. He also appeared on one of the events of The Match, a made-for-TV golf show that pits famous athletes against professional golfers.
Manning's handicap is reportedly hovering in the single digits, with his index down to 4.0.
To achieve that kind of length as a golfer, you need to know how to find the fairway off the tee, something Manning excels at… That was not the case at Castle Pines Golf Club on Wednesday.
Setting up the elevated 1st tee, Manning was surrounded by fans eager to see how good his game was. Ever the entertainer, Manning gave his fans a show, just not the one they were expecting.
Manning took a swipe at his ball, then quickly threw a one-handed catch on his driver on the follow-through, a classic sign of a bad shot. And it was. With a crowd of fans watching closely, Manning continued his drive and sent it short and away.
Look at the picture below.
At first a strange silence enveloped the area around the tee, but the star defender was quick to lighten the mood with a quip.
“Does anyone see where it went?”
The one-liner sparked a riot of laughter among fans who saw it, and as Manning began to walk away, they added their own quip, joining the big “one of us” chant in the kind jab. in Manning.
With the pro-am over, Manning will have to sit back and watch as the top 50 players on the PGA Tour do their best to claim the $4 million prize, hopefully without a top drive.
