Cam Thomas Looks To Improve Game Around – Basketball Insiders
Brooklyn Nets guard Cam Thomas has lofty ambitions as he enters his fourth year on the roster. The shooting guard has always been a capable scorer. However, the one knock on Thomas' game has been his overall ability as a playmaker. Thomas knows this and is making a big effort to improve this team going into the next season. Here's what he had to say when asked what he could do to take his game to the next level:
“Just doing everything—doing it consistently. “I had a big jump in points from my sophomore year to my third year,” Thomas said. “I was 22.5 years old [points per game]so I think I'm trying to get into that 25 ppg range, step up the play and just try to continue to improve my all-around game. And hopefully, it leads to a win. “
If you think Cam Thomas is going to start neglecting the strongest part of his game, his scoring ability, think again. Thomas is looking to improve his shot to enter the new campaign.
“Last summer, I tried to put a lot of emphasis on shooting, and I think I was up in the League in terms of catching and shooting. [this past season],” said Thomas. “So, continue to work on that and improve the skills I had coming into the League, like my dribbling and finishing the basket, [while] still improving in catching and shooting, trying to have the best percentage in the League.”
Thomas may have a big role for the Nets this coming season.
Cam Thomas Looks To Make Significant Improvements In His Overall Game
The impact of Cam Thomas
Thomas has done nothing but improve year after year. In his career so far, he has averaged 14.0 points, 2.5 total rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game, along with a field goal percentage of 44.0 percent. Last season, Thomas had a breakout year. He averaged 22.5 points, 2.9 assists, 3.2 total rebounds per game, and shot 36.4 percent from three-point range. As one can see, he is a smart goal scorer, but the efficiency and other aspects of Thomas' game have not changed. Last year, Cam Thomas finished seventh in the Most Improved Player of the Year voting. With Mikhal Bridges still with the Knicks, the door is wide open for him to make a run for said award given that he will have an expanded role.
Can He Make a Run for Most Improved Player of the Year?
If Thomas can improve his passing and shooting efficiency, the Most Improved Player Award is not out of the question. Especially if he can start repeating at an efficient rate. The Nets are expected to be a lottery team. However, if Thomas can lead this team to a potential Play-In spot, then his chances for this award will increase significantly. If Cam Thomas puts in the work as planned, a whole new dimension to his game will open up for the six-foot-four shooting guard.
