Eduardo 'Sugar' Nunez Calls Time as Mandatory Contender, Faces Miguel Marriaga on Aug. 31 DAZN Show
Eduardo “Sugar” Nunez will bide his time as he waits for his first title.
The red-hot junior lightweight knockout artist was a late addition to the already announced Aug. 31 DAZN. Mexico's Nunez will face Colombia's Miguel Marriaga in the Diego Pacheco-Maciej Sulecki super middleweight title fight.
Both songs will be played live at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.
Nunez (27-1, 27 knockouts), No. 10 at 130 by The Ring, he holds the IBF mandatory challenger. Reigning titleholder Anthony Cacace (22-1, 8 KOs), No. 5 at 130, he was ordered to face Nunez. An agreement was not reached, and the case of the fund was called.
However, it has since been decided that Belfast's Cacace will face ex-list Josh Warrington. The biggest clash in the UK takes place on September 21 at Wembley Stadium in London.
Most likely, Nunez will shoot the winner. He got an eleventh round stoppage against former top scorer Shavkatdzhon Rakhimov (17-2-1, 14 KOs). The February 16 IBF title clash took place in Rakhimov's home country of Uzbekistan, Nunez's first fight outside of Mexico.
Now he gets the chance to fight in the US for the first time as he tries to extend his knockout streak to 17 fights.
“I am happy and motivated by our commitment at the door, against the previous ones [three-time title challenger],” said Nunez. “In addition to the fact that we will play for the first time in the United States. I know you are a strong fighter with a lot of experience but that motivates me even more to come in the best possible shape.
“We will be ready to go out with our hands up on August 31.”
Marriaga (31-7, 26 KOs) came up short in a title bid against Nicholas Walters, Oscar Valdez and Vasiliy Lomachenko. There is no shame in losing to anyone from these three.
However, the 37-year-old Colombian has stumbled into runner-up status with just two wins in the past five years. However, he has not lost his interest in ending Nunez's title hopes.
“This is a great opportunity for me to put myself back on the list of the best in this division,” said Marriaga. “Sugar is a very good and strong fighter, but I feel happy, and I will give you everything I got on August 31.”
Also making his US debut is England's Cheavon Clarke (9-0, 7 KOs). The 2020 Great Britain Olympian faces Efotober Apochi (12-2, 12 KOs) in a ten-round cruiserweight contest.
Other moments as previously reported by The Ring:
Interim WBC flyweight champion Adelaida Ruiz (16-0-1, 8 KOs) defends against 2020 US Olympian Ginny Fuchs (3-0, 3 KOs)
Arturo Cardenas (14-0-1, 8 KOs) faces Jesus Arechiga (21-1, 15 KOs) in a scheduled ten-round junior featherweight bout.
