Louisa 'Bang Bang' Hawton Returns On September 7th, Looking For RING Champion Seniesa Estrada Next
Louisa 'Bang Bang Lulu' Hawton is set to return to the ring for the second time since 2019.
The 39-year-old will face Viviana Ruiz in a scheduled ten-round flyweight bout on September 7 at HBF Stadium in Perth, Australia.
The fight marks the homecoming of Hawton (11-2, 6 knockouts), a former WBO 108-pounder who hasn't fought in Perth in nine years. It will support the Thammanoon Niyomtrong-Alex Winwood WBA belt fight.
The fight will see Hawton jump two weight classes. Despite jumping seven pounds, he is confident of showing the results of a productive training camp in the US
“I've been to the States, training over there in Vegas with Derrick Harmon at the Top Rank gym, which was amazing,” Hawton told The Ring. “The training was going well. I always love my training, so I always put in 120% effort when I'm in the gym. It's a place where I feel like I can get along with myself.
“I'm going up a few bars. When the opportunity arose to fight in front of the crowd and return to Australia for the first time since 2015, I couldn't turn it down. Fighting in Perth is something I've really wanted to do for a long time, so you've got to take the opportunity when it presents itself, right?
“It's important to me because it's been a long time. I have a lot of people who always want to see me fight and ask me when I fight in Australia, back in Perth. I'm excited to be a part of this card, especially, because Alex is on the cusp of winning a world title. He's someone I've worked with over the years and we've been apart, so to see him at that level is amazing. To be a part of this program with him, I think it's special.”
The connection between Hawton and Winwood goes back further than the gym.
“A lot of people don't know this, but Alex grew up in the same town that I grew up in,” Hawton said. “He's younger than me, but we actually went to the same high school. Erin McGowan went to the same high school as us. He is older than me.
“So if Alex does this job and becomes a world champion, there will be three world champions who came out of Coodanup Senior High School. How's that for a chance?
“That tells you a lot about the school, doesn't it?” he added laughing. “Champions are made in strong places.”
Hawton is a skilled boxer with slick footwork and good boxing kit.
His body attack is amazing, especially the left rip. Regular ground work will be key for Hawton against the naturally big Ruiz (8-1, 4 KOs). The plan is to slow down the 41-year-old Colombian-born Australian, who is also a famous boxer.
“I think it's going to be a great fight,” Hawton said. “I think it will be to please people. I'm sure we can steal the show too. Viviana, has a novice pedigree and has now entered the ranks. I know he's going to bring the fire and he's going to bring the fight and he's going to defend his (district) title, so it's going to be a good fight.”
The move up to 112 pounds is meant to be temporary.
At only 5'0”, Hawton has spent most of his career at atomweight. He can easily make it to strawweight, with reigning The Ring champion Seniesa Estrada (26-0, 9 KOs).
“I would like to fight Seniesa Estrada,” said Hawton. “That's a fight I'd like to have, especially since he's in awe of my weight. Then you have Yokasta Valle; he fought for him with undisputed valor. Both of those two fights, I think, are good fights for me that I would like to do in the very near future.
“These are the fights that I have watched and would like to somehow bring back to Australia. Perth is definitely doing a lot to bring major events back to Western Australia. “
The Western Australian government has recently shown great interest in hosting major sporting events. The most prominent example is the Vasiliy Lomachenko and George Kambosos Jr IBF lightweight belt in May.
It wasn't long ago that this could be like a dream. Now, it could be a real possibility.
“It was amazing, it was great,” Hawton said. “Our prime minister, Roger Cook, is investing heavily in bringing events to Perth that will showcase our beautiful city in terms of tourism and things like this. Being a part of this program and looking to do these big fights and bring them back to Perth, that's something I really want to push for. “
