Nazarena Romero Stops Paulette Valenzuela Cuesta in Round 10, Wins WBA 122-Pound Title
The third time was the charm for Nazarena Romero.
An outstanding display by the Argentinian led to his first title win. Romero powered her way to a tenth-round stoppage of Paulette Valenzuela Cuesta in their vacant WBA 122-pound bout.
A bout of insufficient power forced a stoppage at 0:18 of the tenth round on Saturday at Casino Buenos Aires in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Romero broke into his usual in-ring dance routine, hugging all over to celebrate the occasion.
Romero (14-0-2, 8 knockouts) fought back against Mayerlin Rivas and Erika Cruz in separate WBA title bids. Cruz was stripped of the belt after their May 11 fight due to a Stanozolol drug test. The WBA initially ordered a Romero-Rivas rematch but it was Valenzuela Cuesta who stepped in for the vacant title fight.
Fittingly, it came down to the two-day WBA KO Drug Festival.
Romero never retired in their scheduled ten-round match. His incredible engine shots and power were too much for Valenzuela Cuesta to weather. Romero delivered powerful shots down the middle and wide angles during their fight.
The aging was evident as Valenzuela Cuesta's left eye was cut and bruised. Romero also did not forgive the corpse. A left hook set up a series of right hands along the ropes late in the eighth round.
Romero came in to close out the ninth. A left hook to the body left Valenzuela Cuesta in excruciating pain just before the bell but he got out.
His luck would run out when the bell rang for the tenth and final round.
Another low left hook forced Valenzuela Cuesta's back leg to kick out. He managed to stay on his feet but Romero quickly followed up on this attack. The scramble on the ropes was enough to force referee Roberto Ramirez to stop the bout.
Valenzuela Cuesta (17-4, 4 KOs) is now 0-2 in major title fights, having previously been upset by Segolene Lefebvre in their title fight on Nov. 2021 WBO 122-pound.
The celebration soon began for a happy-go-lucky Romero. She danced to La Bouche's song “Be My Lover” crying loudly as the belt was tied around her waist.
Romero's last four victories have all come over the middle distance, marking the first time he has gone past the fourth round.
The main action saw Jose Aguero (12-0, 7 KOs) looking for a fifth round knockout of Jorge Luis Martinez (17-4-1, 11 KOs). Multiple punches left Martinez defenseless for a stoppage 2:56 into the fifth round of the junior lightweight district title fight.
Also on the card, Ruben Nestor Neri Muñoz (16-2, 12 KOs) received a superb tenth-round knockout of undefeated Chann Thonson. Muñoz knocked Thonson (16-1, 13 KOs) down twice in the ninth and forced a stoppage at 0:35 of the tenth and final round of their lightweight contest.
Jaquan Carty (7-0, 5 KOs) defeated local prospect Brian Matias Perez (5-1, 2 KOs). The scores were 77-75, 77-75 and 79-73 for Carty, the Toronto-born, Atlanta-based middleweight.
The show took place as part of the WBA's 31st KO Drugs festival, an event that began in 1991 in Venezuela. This event is a way to fight the flood of drugs and their impact on unsuspecting youth throughout South America. Boxing became part of the program in 1993.
