Didier Deschamps defends France star Kylian Mbappe after Euros criticism

Didier Deschamps has defended Kylian Mbappe after the France forward came under fire for his recent performances at Euro 2024.

The new Real Madrid player has scored just once during France's European campaign, with a penalty against Poland proving to be his only goal in the competition so far. Mbappe broke his nose during his side's 1-0 win over Austria and has been forced to play with a protective mask since then.

His quick return to the field saw the striker receive a lot of criticism for his lack of success in front of the net, although Mbappe remains the only Frenchman to score in the tournament.

Jumping to his defence, France coach Deschamps silenced Mbappe's naysayers. “Don't you think he has recorded enough history for what he has done so far?,” he said on a French television program. Telefoot.

“He wants to make more history. We did everything we could with him, along with the medical staff, to get him here. During the preparation, he had a little back problem, but Kylian is here.

“Even if he is not 100%, I know very well that for an opponent, knowing that he is playing makes him think and forces him to practice.”

Les Blues have scored just three goals in total so far in Germany – two own goals and one from Mbappe's penalty. They became the first team in Euro history to reach the last four without conceding a single goal in open play, advancing to the semi-finals to face Spain on Tuesday.

Their success happened after defeating Portugal 5-3 on penalties, they eliminated players like Cristiano Ronaldo from this competition.
