Crawford's Tactics Against Canelo: Lessons From Mayweather And Bivol

Terence Crawford's TRAINER, Brian 'BoMac' McIntyre, says he will closely study the fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr and Dmitry Bivol when Bud faces Canelo Alvarez in order to use the tactics they have to defeat the Mexican star.

Imitation of Kings

BoMac will use the Mayweather and Bivol fights to get ideas to create a plan for Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs) to follow to defeat the super middleweight champion Canelo (61-2-2, 39 KOs). It will be so hit and run by Crawford 12 rounds. Imitating the style of Bivol and Mayweather on Canelo will bore the fans on PPV. Many will be angry and feel left out if Crawford doesn't stand up and fight to make people happy. Crawford's last fight against Israel Madrimov was a chess game and not fun to watch.

It's still questionable whether Crawford will be able to fight Canelo before he retires, but it's good to know how he plans to fight him. It will be a copy of Mayweather and Bivol. The fight may not be exciting for the fans if Crawford connects and takes three steps back the way Floyd did, but the method may work for him to win the decision.

Mayweather fought a 22-year-old Canelo in 2013 at 152-lb catchweight and fought as much as Shakur Stevenson does now. Floyd ducked and retreated two to three feet to avoid his attempts to return fire.

He frustrated Canelo by using his speed to connect one shot and retreat to safety. It was like watching a match of tag. When Canelo approached, Mayweather pinned him.

WBA light heavyweight champion Bivol used the same style as Floyd but without the slow back and power punches. He was the same size as Canelo, so he didn't have to use Mayweather's full fighting style, but it was still the same.

Fighting for Crawford's Legacy, Not Entertainment

“He made her move her feet. “If there's a fight, that's the fight I'm going to watch again,” trainer BoMac McIntyre said on Luke Thomas' YouTube channel about his reading of the Canelo-Bivol fight if Terence Crawford gets a fight with Canelo Alvarez. “I was looking at Mayweather [vs. Canelo]again.

“He told me the same thing he told the world. 'That's the fight I want [Canelo]. I want to put a stamp on my history, and I want to come out on top,'” BoMac about Crawford looking for Canelo Alvarez for legacy purposes.

If you're Canelo, you have a decision to make about the Crawford fight because BoMac has told the fans how he plans to put together the match schedule. That will put Canelo in a situation where he will be forced to solve the style he is facing 0-2, it will not be easy. Crawford will be mad after he comes to tie up Canelo if he closes the distance.

It's a bad situation for Canelo because he'll be facing a bigger version of Mayweather or Shakur Stevenson, and it won't be a real fight the way he likes it. It can be cat and mouse. Assuming Canelo wins, he won't get credit. That's a given. It could be just fighting for money and attracting attention in the boxing world.

This will be a fight only for Crawford, who is getting a big retirement salary and will come out victorious, or loser. All Crawford has to do is make Canelo struggle to beat him, and he'll be hailed as the winner after that.

The fans will hate Canelo, tarnish his history. It would be the same if Crawford fought the young lightweight Gervonta Davis and struggled to beat him. Crawford would get zero credit for beating him, and if it was a hard fight, he would be laughed at.

Crawford's performance against Madrimov

“I give him an A,” Bomac said when asked to rate Crawford's fight against WBA junior middleweight champion Israel Madrimov on August 3. “He worked his tail off in that fight, and Madrimov didn't do anything we thought he would do.”

The fans didn't give Crawford an A grade for his fight with Madrimov. Crawford took a lot of good hands and looked his age. He won this fight by a 12-round decision, but his performance showed that he is not the same fighter at 154 as he was at 147, 140, and 135. Fans give Crawford a C grade, and others consider it a D performance.

“He used his jab a lot, and he tried to get Madrimov to connect with him a little bit, which Madrimov wouldn't do,” BoMac said. “I asked him [Crawford] if he was strong, and he said he was physically strong, but his fist had no pop in it. I think at 154, Bud can do really well. “

Madrimov landed several heavy right hands that clipped Crawford's head, and they looked powerful. The punches were heavy enough to prevent Crawford from fighting the way he did when he fought at 147 in his previous bout against Errol Spence.

“That right hand he was throwing, I didn't think he could throw it like that,” BoMac said of Madrimov. “We thought it would go the way GGG threw it. So that surprised me. You won't be able to do much with it because when he saw that he could get it, he just threw it,” BoMac said about the rights Madrimov used to beat Crawford.
