Darwin Nunez was suspended for five games following the altercation

Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez has been slapped with a five-match international ban for his role in a brawl between Uruguay players and Colombia fans at the Copa America.

Uruguay players said Colombia fans were abusing their families during the semi-final match in July and entered the stadium to confront the suspects after violence reportedly broke out in that part of the stadium.

Six weeks later, CONMEBOL's disciplinary commission fined the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) a total of $20,000 (£15,130), as well as issuing fines and/or suspensions to 11 players. AUF chief Marcelo Garcia has also been handed a six-month pitch ban for all CONMEBOL competitions.

Nunez, banned for the next five matches for his country, has been severely suspended. He will miss the upcoming World Cup qualifiers where he will face Paraguay, Venezuela, Peru, Ecuador and Colombia. He is allowed to return when they face Brazil on November 16.

Nunez was also fined $20,000, the heaviest fine ever imposed. The Liverpool player will not have to pay out of pocket money, instead it will be automatically deducted from the AUF's prize money and broadcast fees.

Tottenham Hotspur's Rodrigo Bentancur was banned for four games and fined $16,000 (£12,100), while there were three-match bans and $12,000 (£9,080) fines for Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo and Atletico Madrid's Jose Gimenez, as well as Mathias Olivera.

Sebastian Caceres, Matias Vina, Emiliano Martinez, Brian Rodriguez, Santiago Mele and Facundo Pellistri, who recently left Manchester United for Panathinaikos on a permanent transfer, were fined $5,000 (£3,780) but never suspended.

They all have the right to appeal decisions within seven days, but it comes with a $3,000 (£2,270) fee.

Uruguay has made a strong start to South America's World Cup qualifiers through the opening six rounds, sitting second in the table behind only Argentina with eight points to spare. But losing many players for at least three games is a big blow.
