Stu Ross, aka Bikebot, has been announced as the winner of the 2024 AMB Photography Awards Raw Reels category. His edit, which includes a raw and natural cut with Slopestyle heavyweight Luke Parker, shows Luke crunching and pounding through the greens of Dandenong in Victoria. We caught up with Ross to discuss the creation and making of this Raw Reels clip.
'There was a lot of focus on shooting something that has obstacles to work from within. I caught up with Luke to talk about another artist we're working on, and he showed me his childhood upbringing. He would say, “here is the first place I built a jumping place; that's where I learned to jump.”
'And I was like – we should do a little bit of editing here that mixes where he is now, which is a full Slopestyle guy, where he started as a BMX guy riding BMX but also riding mountain bikes in the wilds of the Dandenongs. .'
Parker thought this was a great idea and went out of his way to create a few features specifically for the shoot, and that's when Ross thought this raw and natural setup 'would be perfect for reel comp.'
'We got together one weekend, and the idea was to mix trail bike stuff, basically slopestyle-y tricks but without the woods.'
'It covers the whole area around Sylvan lake and other trails, and we actually shot most of them on the fire roads.'
'We had a big list of things we wanted to go through, and we didn't get a lot of things we wanted to do, so we're going to keep adding to it and making it a bigger, longer program musically. '
Raw Reels judge Jasper de Seymour said of the entries, 'the riding was very focused and unexpected as I personally ride on routes like that where no one is watching…
The reel featured an exceptional ride that moves and sounds to match, creating the perfect storm to collect this year's Raw Reels crown.
It's hard to get the job done straight, especially on bikes, but Stu and Luke managed to create something that stood out for literal miles. Congratulations, gentlemen!'
