Tony Romo is giving the PGA Tour another late game drive.
The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and CBS' top football analyst is currently on the field for next week's PGA Tour Q-School qualifier at Sand Creek Station Golf Club in Newton, Kansas. It's Romo's third straight year playing in the Q-School pre-qualifying round, which includes a pre-qualifying stage followed by three stages where the top five finishers and ties are awarded PGA Tour cards. Those who reach the later stages also receive various levels of status on the Korn Ferry Tour and the PGA Tour Americas.
Romo had come out on top in the previous round, shooting a two-over 218 at Lantana GC in Argyle, Texas over 54 holes to move into the next round at par. He then played in the first round and missed the cut after shooting 13 overs while playing against Scottie Scheffler, who had just graduated from the University of Texas.
IQ-School has a very different look to it now, as the PGA Tour recently changed the event to once again award PGA Tour cards. When Romo went through the previous game in 2018, the highest level of status he could get was a Korn Ferry Tour card. This is where Scheffler ended up playing that season.
Romo, who carries a +2.6 index out of Dallas National Golf Club, hasn't posted any particularly impressive results this year. He finished a disappointing 38 out of 90 at the American Century Championship in Lake Tahoe – an event he has won three times, most recently in 2022. His final tournament was the Utah Open where he finished tied for last among all-time winners. four after the final round of 80.
The 14-year NFL veteran has played in four PGA Tour events, missing the cut each time, most recently at the 2019 Safeway Open (now known as this week's Procore Championship) when he shot 70-78. He also played in three Korn Ferry Tour events in 2020 and 2021, again missing all of the cuts.
That doesn't mean Romo isn't a good golfer. He revealed on the Subpar GOLF podcast in 2020 that he is putting in a ridiculous amount of time trying to improve his game.
“I would say, the beginning of the year when there's no football season, that obviously changes when I have to go and the games, you know, but I'll be there for six to eight hours, once in a season,” he said at the time.
He also had some success at the amateur level, nearly playing in the 2023 US Amateur Four-Ball Championship with teammate (and UT star) Tommy Morrison. He has regularly qualified for the US Open since his retirement, but his most successful effort came in 2010 when he advanced to the home division, but had to withdraw in the final round due to Cowboys OTAs.
This year's preseason will be Wednesday through Friday, meaning the event shouldn't interfere with Romo's day job, calling CBS football as Jim Nantz's color analyst. The pre-qualifying tournament was held at the Sand Creek Station course which recently hosted the US Adaptive Open earlier this year.
The final phase of Q-School will be held December 12-15 in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, at Dye's Valley Course at TPC Sawgrass and Sawgrass Country Club.
