Just 12 months after Team Europe hosted the Solheim Cup in Spain, the team's annual event gets underway this week at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club. The composition of both teams is very similar to that of Finca Cortesin where the two teams tied 14-14 last season – and for that, we can all be thankful. If the drama is anything like last time, golf fans are in for a treat.

Solheim Cup preview

Looking at the matchup on paper, you'd think Team USA would be the heavy favorite. They have two of the top players in the world in Nelly Korda and Lilia Vu, and half of their roster is in the top 25 in the world (compared to just two from Team Europe). But Team Europe has always proven that it is greater than the sum of its parts – and this year should be no different.

Team Europe staged a heroic rally last year during Sunday's anthem to retain the trophy, meaning the Euros are unbeaten in the event since 2017. In fact, Team USA has only two players (Lexi Thompson and Alison Lee) who have played in the games. winning the Solheim Cup team.

The betting markets may favor the US as they look to defend their home soil, but make no mistake – the European team are no pupovers. Expect this one to come down to the last few games come Sunday afternoon.

Why is the Solheim Cup in consecutive years?

If you're wondering why the biannual event is happening again so soon, you're not alone. Although it is true that the Solheim Cup is usually played every year, the event is held in consecutive years after scheduling conflicts caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

When the Ryder Cup was postponed a year during the pandemic, it meant that the main team events for both men. again women were to be held in the same year. In order to play the Ryder Cup event again in the future, the Solheim Cup decided to organize the event in consecutive years.
