What golf handicap does Andy Murray have and what tennis secret does he bring to the course?

Andy Murray was a great tennis player.

He has won two Wimbledon men's tournaments, one US Open, one ATP Final, two Olympic gold medals and a total of 46 career titles around the world.

His ability to withstand pressure was never questioned.

But on Wednesday week at Wentworth in the BMW PGA Championship he found himself under a different kind of pressure, playing in the pro-am tournament alongside fellow Scot Robert MacIntyre.

“I was very nervous,” he admitted afterward, recalling in particular the awkward eighth that ended up in the water. “I couldn't really feel my arms and legs, and I hadn't hit balls in the spot before.”

He plays off a 7.0 handicap so he's very good with clubs instead of rackets in his hand and two holes after his bogey at the eighth speaks to Nick Dougherty on Sky Sports.

When the formalities were over, Murray was asked if there was any skill in tennis that surpassed golf.

“Oh, I think so,” she said.

“It's your mental side because, you know, in the tennis game we play – what is it? – a hundred or a hundred and fifty points and they are important but what you can't do is compound your mistakes.

“When I first started playing golf, I hit the ball and thought I had to hit the green, but I ended up hitting it 20 meters in front of me.

“And, like in tennis, you can't afford that. Your mistakes cannot bleed into three, four, five in a row.

“I hope that's something I'm good at on the golf course and I've learned it on the course.”

After his 18-hole experience with MacIntyre – who won this year's Canadian and Scottish Opens – Murray knew there was something the pros had that he couldn't replicate though.

“The big difference for me is that they swing the ball a lot but they stay still and in control,” he said.
