In a surprising move, 12-year ESPN employee Zach Lowe has been let go, just days after longtime NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski announced his retirement.
Athletic first reported the news:
“ESPN has parted ways with NBA head writer Zach Lowe as part of the network's ongoing layoffs, sources said of the decision…,” Athletic's Andrew Marchand said.
“…Lowe's salary, which was more than seven figures a year, was a major factor in ESPN's decision, according to sources briefed on the terms of his contract. It is expected that he will be the last one in this round.”
Recently, ESPN rehired NFL reporters Robert Griffin III and Samantha Ponder just before the start of the NFL season last month. It's all part of planning for ESPN's fiscal year that ends at the end of September.
Along with writing for ESPN, Lowe appeared regularly on the network's daily NBA Today program, providing color and insight and hosting. The Lowe Post a podcast.
The podcast provided a source of news for the league and this week, Lowe had Lakers coach JJ Redick as a guest on the show.
Lowe had worked at ESPN for more than a decade and was one of the few writers to switch to ESPN during Bill Simmons'. Grantland closed in 2015.
Naturally, many in the NBA community assumed that Lowe would follow in the footsteps of Bill Simmons, Crying.
But if he doesn't, NBC again Amazon they will no doubt look for some NBA talent on the air before their league rights deals begin in 2025.
Or, maybe he'll join former teammate Wojnarowski in helping the St. Louis men's basketball team. Bonaventure.
