WATCH: Will Zalatoris on how Tiger Woods' secret formula can help the average golfer

Tiger Woods had a secret formula for winning tournaments – and Will Zalatoris has a version of it that can be used by all 12 handicap golfers.

The California man knows all about building the foundations that allow a golfer to improve.

After becoming champion in 2018, Zalatoris failed to earn a Korn Ferry Tour card at Q School but doubled up on Monday to qualify and earn his card that way.

A year later he passed the second division; the year after that he was playing on the PGA Tour.

At every stage he added to his game and got better.

He has now finished in the top 10 seven times at major tournaments and won the 2022 FedEx St Jude Championship.

In this Instagram video he explains how a beginner golfer can improve to become a better golfer.

“How do you go from 12 to 8?” he asks. “Do it twice a bit.

“How do you go from 8 to 5? That's where we need to get a little better with the short game, whether that's better with chipping or less than three putts.

“How do you go from 5 to 0? Now all of a sudden, that's hard. From 10 to 5 compared to 5 to 0, like a difference of light years.”

If being a beginner golfer can be overwhelming for most golfers, Zalatoris still insists that three rules will help you get better.

“My three biggest things I always tell people are to get on the green as quickly as possible, take more clubs, and finish doubling.”

He then revealed that Tiger Woods had his own magic rules.

“Tiger had this thing that he did where there were no three putts, no doubles or bogeys on the par-5s, no ups and downs, and no penalties.

“And if he did one of those things he won like 90% of the time – that's half the length of the tournament.”

Zalatoris laughs and says: “It's hard, but what I'm really saying is, 'Here's your 12th handicap version and here's the Tiger version that's crazy but just gives you an idea.'

In the end he ends with a really simple message: “It makes you realize that good golf isn't so much fun.”
