The Open: Xander Schauffele lets Father Stefan drink first from the Claret Jug

Xander Schauffele has given his father Stefan the honor of choosing to drink from the Claret Jug following his gutsy victory at the 152nd Open Championship.
Schauffele fired a flawless 65 at Royal Troon to finish nine under par, two shots clear of overnight leader Billy Horschel and Justin Rose, who was threatening to become the first Englishman to win the Claret Jug since 1992.
South African Thriston Lawrence, who held the lead after 11 holes of the final round before Schauffele made four birdies in six holes, finished a shot back in fourth place with a 68.
“I can't wait to drink,” said Schauffele as he held a jug of Claret. “It's really a dream come true.
“I have all my family and most of my team here. I just want to see what my dad will choose as his first drink.
“He will have to find out what he wants to put in there because he is taking the first step out of it.”
Rose admitted he had mixed feelings after taking a two-way lead before his only bogey of the day on the 12th left him with plenty of room to make up.
“I fainted when I left the course and it hit me hard because I was so strong,” said the 43-year-old student after closing with a 67.
“I won second place, I won points, I won awards, FedExCup points, and all that stuff. At that point, you are working. Then I walk 10 steps later and wipe away the tears.
“But in terms of the way I played and the accomplishment of my emotions today, my mentality, I left everything there. I'm proud of the way I entered.”
