As a mid-handicapper, it can be difficult to learn how to squeeze the golf ball. It is an acquired skill that requires excellent fundamentals and clubface control. But in order to consistently hit it like I want and increase distance and control, learning how to press the ball is key.

Now that I've worked on all kinds of shift changes over the past year or so, it's time to step up my practice and start learning the art of the push. After all, if I'm serious about breaking 80 for the first time (Note: I am passionate about making), this is something I have to do.

To help build that consistency, GOLF Top 100 instructor Jason Birnbaum gave me a distance lesson, talking me through a few different things to do to hit the golf ball.

As it turns out, pressing the ball isn't as difficult as many beginners make it out to be – so check out Birnbaum's tips below to see why.

Learn how to swing the golf ball with this fun drill

In the video above, Birnbaum shows me a fun 2-ball drill that not only teaches me how to squeeze the golf ball, but also gives me instant feedback. By practicing (and perfecting) the drill, I can develop an improved feel for the ball. So let's dive into what he has to say.

Birnbaum's focus begins with finding the “low point.” He then talked me through the 2-ball drill, explaining how my common misses could help determine how to use it for practice.

“If you miss by hitting small shots, I will put another ball [behind the ball you’re planning to hit]and he went down and missed that back ball,” Birnbaum tells me. “Less contact means you're going to get into the ball a lot less if you're going up and you're going to come out early. This means your low point is further back, so you're going to catch the top half of the ball when you go up.”

By using this 2-ball swing, Birnbaum says it will force me to come down with the correct angle of attack, which helps get the club's bottom point on the ball first as well. then the ground – creating pressure and a strong strike.

On the other hand, if you're someone who usually struggles to hit the ball or hit it big, Birnbaum says this 2-ball hit can help with those misses as well.

“Put another ball [in front of the one you’re planning to hit]and hit it over the front ball,” he instructs.

At this point I'm a little nervous, but he walks me through how to use the drill, reminding me to focus on my angle of attack more than anything else.

“To do that, we have to reduce the angle of attack and feel less like a sweep,” added Birnbaum.

“I like this ball because, depending on what your mistake is, you can just put the ball in a different position — even if you're struggling with shots or small shots.”
